Two people died and two others were seriously injured following a head-on collision this afternoon along Kamehameha Highway near Gunstock Ranch, according to a Honolulu Emergency Medical Services report.

Honolulu police told reporters that they have opened a negligent homicide and manslaughter case connected to the accident fronting Malaekahana State Recreation Area.

The driver of a pick-up truck apparently hit a Hyundai sedan head-on before 1:30 p.m. after driving recklessly, police said, prompting the closure of the highway in both directions for several hours.

A man in his 30s was pronounced dead upon arrival, EMS said. His identity was not released.

EMS administered advanced life support and transported three individuals — a woman in her 60s in critical condition, a woman in her 30s in serious condition and a man in his 20s in serious condition — to emergency rooms. EMS said their ages are just estimates. One of those passengers who was transported later died.

No other details were immediately available.
