On the warmest day of the year in the UK, police end their search for a missing swimmer in the River Mersey.

The hunt for a missing swimmer who went missing while taking a late-night plunge in the River Mersey on the hottest day on record in the United Kingdom has been called off. Haydn Griffiths, 23 years old, was last seen on Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m. swimming with a companion from Derby Pool in New Brighton towards offshore windmills. After two days, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency called off their search of the river since Mr. Griffiths had not been located there. Megan, his sister, has begged searchers to keep looking for her “wonderful baby brother,” whom she says is still struggling to remain alive out in the open water.

To find her amazing baby brother, she posted on Facebook, “This is the most essential quest in the whole wide universe.” He is the strongest person I have ever known, and I have no doubt that he is currently engaged in battle. I’ve heard that he may have tried to swim out the offshore wind turbines when the tide changed and he couldn’t swim back to shore, but anyone who knows Haydn knows that he’s incredibly strong and that he’ll be fighting somewhere. The coastguard has been amazing and searching all night with helicopters, boats, and drones.

Press release from the police:

It has been reported by a Merseyside Police spokesman that Mr. Griffiths, last seen in the Derby Pool region, was wearing dark-colored swimming shorts and attempted to swim towards wind turbines before he vanished. She said, “The Maritime and Coastguard Agency conducted a lengthy search of the river last night and today, but they were unable to locate Haydn. Among his other physical characteristics, Haydn is described as “white,” “6 feet 1 inch tall,” “athletic,” and “with short blond hair and blue eyes.” As a result of the record heatwave that has swept the UK, at least ten individuals have drowned after becoming trapped in water.

One organization has warned that the death toll could rise when students take time off from school for the summer, as a 13-year-old boy was the youngest victim in recent days. Authorities and nonprofits have issued warnings about the risks of heat exhaustion and cold-water shock when swimming. They also cautioned against swimming in inland areas, such as riverbeds, because of “hidden threats” beneath the surface.
