For some fathers and sons, playing catch in the backyard can be a bonding experience.

Going to the racetrack is the activity that brings back the most vivid memories of Ron Winchell’s late father. Verne Winchell, the patriarch of the Winchell family, died at the age of 87. His father’s passion for racing was passed down to his son. Gun Runner is the only horse who can compete for the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year and the title of most outstanding older dirt male. That is, if he wins the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday in Del Mar, which is worth $6 million.

Over the years, his family has had several extremely successful businesses. Verne Winchell, the successful businessman who founded the Verne Doughnuts chain, has been an equestrian his entire life. His many exceptional runners include Donut King, who won the Champagne in 1961, and Tight Spot, who won the turf championship in 1991.

He also had a slew of other stakes-winning horses, including Fleet Renee, Olympio, and Sea Cadet. He was the owner of a farm in Kentucky, which Ron continues to own. Winchell had lived in San Marino before moving to Las Vegas with his family in the eighth grade. The move was primarily motivated by business considerations.
