There’s not much more that can be said about Shohei Ohtani’s baseball prowess that hasn’t been said before.
On Wednesday, the Angels pitcher added his 42nd home run to his season tally in the 2-0 win against the Rangers.
With the win the Angels avoided a sweep in the 3-game series.
437-foot homer for Ohtani
Ohtani hit the 437-foot home run in the first inning of the game against the Rangers while facing right-handed pitcher Jon Gary.
The 29-year-old’s last homer was on August 13 against the Astros.
The slugger’s production didn’t stop with his home run as he tallied two additional infield hits in the game that was the third and final game of the series at Globe Life Field.
After Wednesday’s performance, the pitcher has reached 85 RBIs in the season, just 15 shy of his career high for a single season.
In a funny anecdote, Ohtani’s powerful swing made him lose his helmet, forcing him to run the bases helmetless.
Angels record on the horizon
While Ohtani no longer leads the league in home runs, that honor belongs to the Braves’Matt Olson with 43, the Japanese pitcher is just 5 homers away from tying the franchise’s single-season record that for now still belongs to Troy Glaus, who hit 47 home runs in 2000 during his third MLB season.
With 40 games still left in the regular season, it’s only a matter of when for Ohtani to reach and beat the record.
The Angels now head home where they will face the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game series.
Los Angeles are currently 7 games back from the Wild Card race and are looking to get back to .500 this weekend.
They are fourth in the AL West division with a record of 60-62.
