There is an early blow for the New York Giants as promising rookie Bryce Ford-Wheaton has torn his ACL and will be out for a number of months.

The wide-receiver has made a really big impression with the Giants over the course of this summer, arriving as an undrafted free agent.

He was close to finding a place on the practice squad but now Ford-Wheaton is not going to get that chance to impress. He came out of Saturday night’s 33-24 preseason loss to the Jets at MetLife Stadium with a torn ACL and will spend the entire 2023 season on injured reserve.

On Sunday, the Giants began the process of trimming their roster from 90 to the 53-man limit, removing 11 players from the roster.

In addition to putting Ford-Wheaton on IR, five players were waived: WR Collin Johnson, RB James Robinson, DT Kevin Atkins, NT Donovan Jeter and DB Darren Evans.

After suffering his injury, Ford-Wheaton took to X (formerly Twitter) to say: “Never asked God for an easy life, instead I asked him to give me the strength to overcome any obstacle. Appreciate everyone’s support, it’s going to be one hell of a story. See you next year big blue.”

Giants release Johnson

Talking specifically about Collin Johnson, the coach Brian Daboll explained that he thought this would be a good opportunity for him to work towards a new team.

“I figured it [releasing Johnson] would be a good opportunity for him to get a jump-start on potentially the next team, doing him the right way. A guy that’s a hard worker, just we had some other guys that we’re going to keep.
