Rio Ferdinand has scathingly labelled the actions of Manchester United’s owners, the Glazer family, as ‘disgraceful’ and pinned the blame for recent poor results on their lack of communication.
United were dismantled by Brighton in a crushing 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday as Roberto de Zerbi‘s side dominated and took away a deserved three points.
Pressure is beginning to build on Erik ten Hag as their early season struggles continue, with United losing three out of five Premier League matches and facing the daunting prospect of travelling to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Former United defender Ferdinand believes wholesale changes are needed throughout the club and slammed the club’s owners for their lack of action.
‘I don’t think that any fan that watches football, not just Man United, but who watches football and sees what Brighton can do and sees Man United, walked into that stadium at the weekend and thought United would get three points,’ said Ferdinand on his Five YouTube channel.

‘No chance. It’s crazy. People are looking for a scapegoat, that’s the way the media is right now people look for a scapegoat and go that’s the reason.
‘I see people saying [Marcus] Rashford isn’t working hard enough, or Bruno [Fernandes] is the captain. Ralf Rangnick’s comments when he left were along the lines of this doesn’t need medicine this needs open heart surgery.
‘No one looked at that comment and thought ‘let me dig into that’. It shows you that not one individual is going to solve this problem. We had Cristiano Ronaldo, what he’s done in the game, and he can’t solve it.
‘We’ve had a load of managers come in with huge reputations and they haven’t sorted it out. Spent a lot of money and that hasn’t sorted it out. We’ve juggled the pack behind the scenes with recruitment teams and the structure and personnel and that isn’t going to change it.
‘There needs to be a unified approach for it to happen. One of the biggest problems is the ownership.’
United’s controversial owners announced a strategic review last November, which included the possibility of a full sale.
A subsequent bidding war broke out between Qatari billionaire Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but the Glazers are now believed to be reluctant to sell and instead want to wait in an effort to raise the value of the club. The two bidders have been told, however, that there is no change to the process.
Ferdinand, like many Man United supporters, wants an immediate sale of the club and blasted the Americans – who were last seen at United’s FA Cup final defeat against Man City – for their lack of communication that he insists is the root of current issues.

‘These owners, the Glazers, I don’t care what they say now. Since June we haven’t heard from them and even then it was tepid. Communication in any line of work, in any business, is vital for a business to be able to flourish, to prosper, to function properly and their lack of communication is deafening,’ said Ferdinand.
‘It’s been disgraceful in my eyes. This is a fragile changing room, this is a fragile infrastructure, and there is new people coming in and out… this ownership aren’t communicating to help that.
‘We need communication now more than ever and they aren’t getting it and that’s where my anger and frustration comes from.
‘Surely they love the it? Surely they love the club? But I’m being led to believe no they don’t it’s just a business, cold-hearted. The silence speaks so, so, so much. It speaks volumes.’
