Mexican boxer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has admitted that he has not been the best version of himself in the most recent fights but that is going to change when he comes up against Jermell Charlo.

Canelo is currently the undisputed super middleweight champion and he was generally regarded as the sport’s pound-for-pound best performer not so long ago.

His reputation has waned and he is very aware of that, which led to him making some pretty surprising comments for a boxer on Showtime’s second episode of “ALL ACCESS: Canelo vs. Jermell Charlo,”.

“Boxing-wise, I wasn’t 100 percent,” Alvarez said.

“But critics are always looking for something, aren’t they? And obviously, I agree with them, that I haven’t looked the last few fights like I used to. And I don’t want to just give a rebuttal. I’d prefer to show them. And in this fight, you are going to see the difference.”

Canelo won his last two fights

The Mexican did actually win his last two fights which were 12-round super middleweight championship matches. They were won by unanimous decision over Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder.

Dmitry Bivol beat Alvarez convincingly on points in the bout before his victory over Golovkin, but that 12-round fight was contested at the light heavyweight limit of 175 pounds, for Bivol’s WBA belt.

Canelo recently signed a three-fight agreement with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions and the first fight is on September 30 against Charlo.

He is the undisputed junior middleweight champion and he is moving up two weight classes in order to challenge Alvarez for his IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound crowns.
