Kevin Costner‘s next western epic is carving out real estate for next summer. The first two installments of the Yellowstone star’s Horizon: An American Saga will bow in June and August next year.

Warner Bros. has dated Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 for a June 28, 2024 theatrical release. It will be followed two months later by Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 on Aug. 16, 2024. A sequel being released such a short period of time after the first film is rare, but not unheard of. Most recently the horror films X and Pearl were both released in 2022.

According to Costner’s court filings during his recent divorce proceedings, he contributed at least $20 million to the budget of the saga, which is expected to span four films. With the dual strikes, production on the third chapter was put on hold, but the filming for the first two films is complete, with this second wrapping this summer. He previously told Deadline, “I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house … But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f**king conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.” The actor has been working on the project since 1988.

Horizon has received considerable press this year due to its impact on Costner’s other Western, Paramount’s Yellowstone. The actor has been involved in a protracted and messy split with the hit drama as he’s shifted his focus to Horizon films. The show’s team complained that Costner has made himself less available for the series, while Costner’s team has blamed Yellowstone script delays. In either case, it’s very unclear if Costner will return to the show to finish patriarch John Dutton’s storyline when the show eventually returns for the second half of its fifth season. Paramount has announced those remaining episodes will end the series, and will then pivot to launching a new Yellowstone universe title which is expected (though not confirmed) to star Matthew McConaughey. Costner won a Golden Globe for the series earlier this year.

Costner is directing and starring in Horizon, opposite a cast including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower.

Costner is producing with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard. The films come a little over 30 years after Costner took home a directing Oscar for Dances with Wolves, which also won best picture.
