Delonte West was a well-established NBA player during his career, playing for 9 seasons and earning around $16 million throughout them. However, since retiring, West has been dealing with serious mental health issues and substance abuse, which apparently has led him to be homeless, as new information surfaced about his struggles.
In a recent piece by Dana O’Neil of The Athletic, ,various NBA figures spoke about West’s condition and the efforts that they have made to improve his situation, as is reported that the former player is now apparently homeless living outside of a 7-11 store in Virginia, begging for money.
Former teammate talk about Delonte West’s situation
O’Neil talked to former NBA point guard, Jameer Nelson, who played with Delonte West at Saint Joseph’s University, saying that there are plenty of people who have reached out to him and tried to help him.
It brings me to tears. He has so many people who love him, who want to help him, but he has to want to help himself. … I am here for him. I will always be here for him. I tried, and I will continue to try if I can, but he has to meet us halfway. He has to want the help.
Even Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tried to help him
In 2020, West was seen begging for money in Dallas. Mavs owner, Mark Cuban, picked him off the streets, paid for his rehabilitation, and also provided him with a place to stay. He also got a job, but as soon as July 22, West was seen again on the streets, this time in Virginia, where apparently he has been based since.
About his failed attempt to help Delonte West, Cuban simply said ‘I thought I could help. And I tried. I really did. We all did. It’s just. You just feel hopeless.”

West last played in the NBA for the Mavericks in 2012, as he had a brief stint in China. He is most remembered as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics.
