Ferrari, the new film about legendary ex-racer, racecar manufacturer and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari, which was directed and produced by legendary filmmaker Michael Mann, will receive the Icon & Creator Tribute for Innovation at the 33rd Gotham Awards ceremony, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The newly created honor recognizes both a cultural icon (Ferrari) and a creator (Mann).

The event will take place Nov. 27 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Other previously announced honorees include Air director/supporting actor Ben Affleck and Maestro writer/director/lead actor Bradley Cooper. Meanwhile, this year’s Gotham Awards nominations — the first for which films of any budget could be considered — were announced Oct. 24.

“Both Enzo Ferrari and Michael Mann are recognized as legends in their respective industries for their vision, innovation, and relentless commitment to pushing the boundaries of their crafts,” Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, tells THR. “With his thrilling drama highlighting one remarkable season in the life of the man behind the red cars, Mann captures the passion and complexity at the heart of this Italian icon. We are proud to honor both the legacy of Enzo Ferrari and Mann’s extraordinary film.”

Mann is a four-time Oscar nominee, two-time Emmy winner and recipient of WGA, DGA and BAFTA awards who is best known for directing films such as ThiefManhunterThe Last of the Mohicans, HeatThe InsiderAliMiami Vice, Collateral and Public Enemies. He also served as a producer on The Aviator, The Kingdom, Hancock and Ford v. Ferrari.

Mann’s latest film, the independently financed Ferrari, had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and then debuted stateside as the New York Film Festival’s closing night film. Neon will release it in theaters across the U.S. on Christmas Day.
