Liverpool will host a trial event for the new Anfield Road Stand in the coming days as they seek to partially open the top tier before Manchester United come to town on December 17.
The building work encountered major delays earlier this year when the firm in charge went bankrupt, forcing Liverpool to begin this season with the top tier of the stand shut.
According to This Is Anfield, Liverpool are planning to partially open the expanded top tier when they face United later this month, but they are yet to obtain the licence from Liverpool City Council which would allow them to do so.
In order to pick up that licence, Liverpool will host a trial event on December 11, with more than 3,000 fans invited to the top tier of the Anfield Road Stand for a free Q&A event with first-team manager Jurgen Klopp.
Should Liverpool prove that they can host such a number of fans safely, they will be permitted to partially open the top tier for the visit from United.
An extra 5,500 fans could be in attendance for the game against United, which could end up being played in front of the biggest crowd in Anfield history if all goes to plan.
Liverpool’s current attendance record stands at 55,675 and was set all the way back in May 1977 for a 0-0 draw with West Ham United.
The record will definitely be broken when the full top tier is opened. Liverpool are hopeful of doing so later this season, perhaps as early as January if all goes according to plan.
