The NFL wants it all. Sure, football is the most popular sport in the United States, and the NFL is the best-attended domestic sports league on the planet, but the league wants even an even bigger slice of the sporting pie.
On Tuesday, the NFL confirmed it would play multiple games on Christmas Day for the fifth year running — but this time, the league is coming for the NBA, which traditionally has a vise grip on sports fans during that particular holiday.

Christmas Day 2024 takes place on a Wednesday, which is almost always a day of the week without NFL football. Nevertheless, the NFL next season is willing to break its long-standing rule of scheduling Christmas games on a weekend or a Monday. During Monday’s owners meetings, the league said it will play two games on Christmas Wednesday — threatening the NBA’s hold over the holiday.
The NBA and Christmas Day have a long history together. The Association first held a Christmas Day contest in 1947 — the year after it was founded — and has held games on the holiday each year without interruption since 1999. Ten teams compete in five games on Christmas Day, and they’re usually among the NBA’s best squads, featuring some of the league’s most recognizable players.
Sports fans will be spoiled for choice as the calendar flips from 2024 to 2025. Beginning wih the Christmas NFL and NBA games, there are slated to be five consecutive days of NFL action between Dec. 25 and Dec. 30, as well as the revamped College Football Playoff quarterfinals beginning on New Year’s Eve.
In addition to planned games in Brazil and in Spain over the next two seasons, the NFL is seeking to leave its footprint on football fans everywhere — no matter the country or the holiday. How other leagues like the NBA will react will be a topic of great fascination.
