Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez stands as the epitome of Mexican boxing prowess, a legacy that once belonged to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Now, in an unexpected turn, the retired legend has thrown his support behind Alvarez’s decision to face Jaime Munguia next, rather than opting for a more high-profile opponent such as David Benavidez.

Mayweather Jr.’s endorsement comes as a surprise to many within the boxing world, given the relatively lesser stature of Munguia compared to other potential contenders. However, Mayweather urged respect for Alvarez, recognizing him as the current pound-for-pound king. In a statement to FightHype media, Mayweather expressed his support for Alvarez’s choices.

“A lot of time fighters got to do what’s best for them,” Mayweather said.

“You have to live with the decisions that you make. I was in that same situation.

“Canelo didn’t beat the world champions. He didn’t beat the champions by struggling.

“He clearly dominated a lot of those guys. He tested his skills. Light heavyweight, he won a title.

“Then he fought another guy at light heavyweight and came up short.

“But he’s a Future Hall of Fame, a hell of a fighter, everybody wants their business different, I wish him nothing but the best,” he added.

For Alvarez, Mayweather’s endorsement holds special significance, validating his decisions in the twilight of his career. He expressed gratitude for Mayweather’s words, highlighting the significance of praise from a figure of Mayweather’s stature in boxing.

“I feel happy because he knows everything,” Canelo told Little Giant Boxing.

“That was coming from him, who has been and done everything, so I feel special.”

Despite nearing the end of his career, Alvarez remains undaunted, demonstrating a willingness to face any challenger, including Benavidez. His commitment to maintaining his top-tier status is evident, fueled by Mayweather’s endorsement and his own unwavering determination.

How long will Canelo keep fighting?

Looking ahead, Alvarez revealed his intention to continue boxing for at least another four years, aiming to maximize his potential in the ring. While acknowledging that age brings its challenges, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of greatness.

A pending bout at the Azteca

Moreover, Alvarez has his sights set on a monumental event: a fight at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. With ambitions to stage a historic bout in his homeland’s most prestigious sporting venue, Alvarez seeks to cement his legacy as one of boxing’s all-time greats.
