Everything to Know About the Sequel to Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick’s ‘A Simple Favor’ Film

Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick are set to return for more backstabbing fun in a sequel to 2018’s A Simple Favor. The dark-comedy thriller was based on the book of the same name by Darcey Bell and followed mommy blogger Stephanie (Kendrick) as she befriends a wealthy mom named Emily (Lively). After Emily mysteriously disappears, Stephanie launches her own investigation and finds herself entangled in a complicated web of lies, ultimately learning Emily wasn’t who she said she was. Written by Jessica Sharzer and directed by Paul Feig, A Simple Favor 2 was announced in May 2022. “I can’t wait to revisit the hilarious, deeply dark inner world of Stephanie Smothers, and reunite Stephanie and Emily under the watchful and stylish eye of the glorious Paul Feig,” Kendrick told Entertainment Weekly about playing the lead role again. Has ‘A Simple Favor’ Been Greenlit for a Sequel?

Six months after the sequel was announced in May 2022, Feig announced that the script for the film had already been written. Amazon MGM Studios officially announced the movie is a go in March 2024.

When Will the Sequel Be Released?

During an interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show, Feig hinted that fans wouldn’t see the sequel in 2023.

“We kind of have a deal to do it, it’s just figuring out scheduling and everything. That’s the thing that rules Hollywood is schedules,” he said in November 2022. “Because now Blake is gonna have a baby and stuff. So, we’ll see. It’s gonna get made. It’s just not sure what the timeline is right now.”

Where Did ‘A Simple Favor’ Leave Off?

In the original film, Emily was sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing her dad and sister. Meanwhile, Stephanie moved on from Emily’s husband Sean (Henry Golding) and was dating a new guy while also working as an amateur detective. Sean, for his part, found success as a best-selling author and professor amid his wife’s prison sentence.

Who Will Return for the Sequel to ‘A Simple Favor’?

In addition to Kendrick, Lively and Golding, several other actors are set to reprise their roles including Andrew Rannells as Stephanie’s friend Darren, Joshua Satine as Stephanie’s son, Miles, Ian Ho as Emily and Sean’s son, Nicky, Bashir Salahuddin as Detective Summerville and Kelly McCormack as Stacy.

What Has Anna Teased About Stephanie’s Journey?

“I’ve actually read the script now and it’s so good,” the Alice, Darling star told E! News in January 2023. “They did such a great job of, in some ways, making her sort of older and wiser. But, at the same time, there are qualities that a person just can’t really change about themselves.”

What is the Plot of ‘A Simple Favor 2?’

Multiple sources announced in March 2024 that the sequel will take place in Capri, Italy, as Emily plans to marry a wealthy Italian businessman. “Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square,” Deadline‘s description of the film reads.

Will ‘A Simple Favor 2’ Be Released in Theaters?

Unlike the original film, A Simple Favor 2 will not have a theatrical release and will premiere on Prime Video.
