The Los Angeles Lakers are heating up again — and, arguably, at the perfect time of the season.
The Lakers are on a five-game winning streak that has silenced doubts around their viability as a playoff team. As Los Angeles steadily climbs back up the standings, the chances of a playoff run will increase — and one of the Lakers’ superstar fans still thinks LeBron James can lead them to an unlikely championship this season.

Tunechi tells contenders to tread lightly
During an appearance on FOX Sports‘ “Undisputed” on Friday, rapper Lil Wayne told hosts Paul Pierce and Skip Bayless that an air of inevitability still exists around LeBron and the Lakers — and if they escape the Play-In Tournament, they will once again be a tough out in the Western Conference playoffs.
Lil Wayne — a five-time Grammy winner legally known as Dwayne Michael Carter — compared the LeBron’s Lakers to two of the most inevitable athletes in North American sports: Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. The latter, a six-time Super Bowl champion, always seemed to thrive when the chips were down and relished leading the New England Patriots (and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) to unlikely success, whereas Mahomes has won three Super Bowls for the Kansas City Chiefs before his 30th birthday.
James, a four-time NBA champion, has led three different franchises to the promised land but has the unfortunate distinction of losing more Finals series (five) than he has won. LeBron guided the seventh-seeded Lakers to the Western Conference Finals last season before the eventual champion Denver Nuggets swept LA out of the playoffs, and there’s no doubt the 39-year-old wants to set the record straight as his legendary career nears its end.
Moving up the standings
In the meantime, the Lakers are trying to finish as high as they can in the standings to give themselves a better shot to add more silverware after the inaugural NBA Cup back in December.
Los Angeles now has a 41-32 record after Wednesday night’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies, in which James became the second-oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double. With that win, the Lakers have moved to within two games of the seventh-seeded Phoenix Suns with nine games left to play. This late-season surge mirrors last year’s late run for the Lakers, who finished the year with 17 wins from their final 24 games entering the postseason.
