Viewers of ITV’s comedy-drama Passenger were left complaining that they still “didn’t know what was going on” in the series, as the final episode aired on our screens this evening (April 8).

The sixth and final episode of the series, which was partly filmed in Yorkshire, ended on a major cliffhanger – potentially gearing itself up for a second season, but viewers were still left feeling confused.

In the final episode of the ITV show, Detective Riya Ajunwa continued her investigation into the two missing girls in the town of Chadder Vale as word spread around the town that the bread factory was being closed with immediate effect – leaving half of the town out of work.

Derek Jackson, owner of Jumbo Breads, was hit in the back of the head by a masked character, later revealed to be the Pangaea boss. He was then threatened to go home and tell his wife about the closure – or be killed. After an emotional conversation with wife Terry, he takes the dramatic decision to take petrol canisters to and set fire to the factory, shouting “you can’t make me go down there”.

Ali and Nish venture into the basement of the bread factory, where they discover that the Pangea game has a disturbing link to the real life events which have been taking place in the town. A video of the Pangea boss is displayed on screen with a message saying: “This time, the game is real.

“If you win, a life-changing prize awaits. If you fail, well, better to die greatly, no?” She then tells them that their journey is about to begin via the door on their right, and they realise they’re in the game.

The show ended with Ali and Nish trapped in the basement, screaming for help on the phone to Riya, and unaware that the building above them is going up in flames. Viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to complain that they still “didn’t know what was going on”, while others branded it a “waste of six hours”.

@lbozza17 said: “I still don’t know what’s going on #passenger” and @TheClaw01578121 added: “Don’t make another series of #Passenger @ITV.”

Another viewer, @roscoeleebarnes, said: “Has anyone enjoyed a single second of this cr*p? #Passenger.” @loves_rats said: “I have a feeling there might be a second series #Passenger I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.”

@smokingcyclist wrote: “Happy Valley had fully drawn characters and knew its story arc. Stranger Things has brilliant scripts. #itv #passenger has none of those things, nor much idea what it’s about. Annoying waste of six hours.”
