St John Ambulance took a 35-year-old man and a three-year-old girl to Rockingham Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

That man is now assisting police with their inquiries after the body of a woman was discovered inside the home.

Police said he was known to the woman and that her death was being treated as suspicious, but authorities have not yet determined how she died.

“We’ve been in contact with the forensic pathologists, and we’re still awaiting the information in relation to the cause of death,” Acting Detective Superintendent David Gorton said.

While there was minimal fire damage to the property, Gorton said it was a “confronting” scene at the home for first responders.

“At this point in time, we are treating it as a murder,” he said.

Detectives are also working on a second potential homicide, which happened a few hours later in Dawesville following an altercation between two men at a service station.
