Donald Trump’s criminal trial has outed his close friendship with Tom Brady. The 2017 list of close contacts provided to jurors showed the two were in touch more than the NFL star suggested in his interview with Variety. If you’re wondering when this friendship first blossomed, it was over 20 years ago. In an interview with Howard Stern (via People), Brady shared, “In 2002, after I won my first Super Bowl, he asked me to go judge a Miss USA competition, which I thought was the coolest thing in the world because I was 24 years old and had a chance to do something like that.” Trump kept in touch with Brady, frequently calling him after his NFL games.

From there, the two began golfing together and grew a close bond. Brady gushed about his friendship with Trump to WEEI-FM (via The Guardian) in 2015. “Donald is a good friend of mine. I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends. That is what I have to say. He’s a good friend of mine…” he shared. “I think it’s pretty remarkable what he’s achieved in his life. You’re going from business, kind of an incredible businessman and then a TV star, and then getting into politics…” It’s no wonder people thought he and Trump were close, and seeing the contact list presented in the trial affirmed that idea.
