Atletico Madrid have rekindled their interest in signing Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The 28-year old Dane was disappointed to see a move to Atletico fall through last summer but head coach Diego Simeone has maintained a watching brief and kept in contact.

Hojbjerg has one year left on contract and has been keen to move for more regular starts and a fresh challenge.

Atletico are looking for a holding midfielder and have trimmed their squad to accommodate wages for new signings losing the likes of Memphis Depay and Stefan Savic.

Fulham, Juventus and Napoli have all shown interest in Hojbjerg over the past year but Atletico hope to be able to strike a deal with Tottenham for the £15m-rated Denmark international.

Fenerbahce are another side to have also discussed signing Hojbjerg.

Jose Mourinho was announced as manager of the Turkish giants last week, signing a two-year deal.

Hojbjerg had signed for Tottenham in 2020 when Mourinho was preparing for his first full season in charge of the North London side.

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou wants to freshen up his squad this window and is looking for additions through the spine of his team.

They are willing to let Tanguy Ndombele leave on a free while Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic and Japhet Tanganga have already left.
