Shōgun co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are set to be honored at the upcoming Austin Film Festival.

Showrunner Marks will pick up the 2024 Writer’s Writer Award and Kondo will receive the 2024 New Voice Award as part of the Festival & Writers Conference in October.

Shōgun, billed as a limited series, is among the most expensive scripted series for FX after the network spent years developing the series, which is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name.

FX and Hulu are prepping two more seasons of the breakout series from Marks and Kondo, teaming with Clavell’s estate to extend Shōgun seasons two and three. Both seasons are currently in development, meaning that a two-season renewal depends on how the creative comes in.

On the TV front, besides Shōgun, Marks was the creator and showrunner of Starz’s Counterpart drama. Kondo has earlier writing credits for Electric Literature, Ploughshares Solos and Indiana Review.

In film, Marks was a writer on Top Gun: Maverick for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Paramount, and he wrote Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau. A sequel is in development.

AFF’s Festival & Writers Conference will run from Oct. 24 to 31, 2024, with Marks and Kondo on hand to discuss their careers and collaboration on Shōgun.

Other panelists set for the AFF’s writers conference include Marissa Jo Cerar, creator of the miniseries Woman of the Movement and Black Cake; Vida creator Tanya Saracho; Matt Selman, showrunner of The Simpsons; and Chernobyl and The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin.

Also booked into the AFF conference as panelists is Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, writers of A Quiet Place;  Pamela Ribon, writer on Nimona; and Julie Plec, the showrunner for The Vampire Diaries universe.
