Hit-run charges withdrawn against woman accused of killing her sister

A young woman accused of the 2022 hit-run death of her older sister in Melbourne’s west has had dangerous driving charges against her withdrawn.

Asyai Luk, 24, faced the County Court of Victoria on Tuesday morning, when the judge was told the matter had been resolved.

The court heard that she had instead pleaded guilty to two lesser charges – being a learner driver without an appropriate supervisor and careless driving.

“This matter weighed very heavily on the family and my client,” her lawyer, George Balot, said.

The court had previously heard that Asyai’s 24-year-old sister, Anong Luk, also known as Gol, died after being dragged by a moving SUV and then pinned between two vehicles on High Street in Sunshine on November 7, 2022.

The prosecution had alleged Asyai, then aged 22, was behind the wheel of the car and failed to stop following a roadside argument with her sibling.

Anong was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital suffering head injuries, where she later died.

Video footage of the incident, seen by this masthead, shows Anong being slammed into the rear of a parked car, pinning her momentarily, before she stumbled across the road and collapsed on a nature strip.

At an earlier hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, Asyai’s barrister, Peter Morrissey, SC, labelled the incident a “freakish occurrence” that neither sister could have foreseen.
