Police in South Mackay have arrested a 31-year-old man following a shooting in South Mackay on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers were called to a Robb Place address just after 4.30pm after reports that a woman had been shot.

When police arrived, they found a deceased woman and a man with non-life-threatening injuries to his hand.

At about 5.20pm, an emergency was declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act and the area between Robb Place and Paradise, Archibald, Kindermar and Denton streets cordoned off.

As of 8pm, the emergency was still in place, with the public asked to avoid the exclusion zone and stay indoors until further notice.
