A police officer drew his gun and fired on a car in Sydney’s inner west overnight after the driver of the vehicle deliberately drove towards him, police say.

The incident took place in an underground car park of an apartment complex on the Princes Highway at St Peters, where police were responding to reports of a break and enter.

They said three officers attended the apartment block about 1.15am and entered the underground car park, where they confronted two males.

When the pair got into a white Volkswagen Golf and began to drive off, police tried to stop them, and the car was driven directly at a constable, police said.

The officer drew his weapon and fired a single shot at the vehicle but it did not stop and the two males fled the scene.

Police could not confirm if the bullet had struck the car but said there were no reports of injuries.

The car was found alight in an underground car park on Harris Street in Pyrmont about 45 minutes later, police said. Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze.

Police have established crime scenes at both locations in St Peters and Pyrmont, and commenced an investigation into the incident.

The car is undergoing forensic examination.
