Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Brilliant defending at both ends as Estupinan slides in with perfect timing to disposses Salah before Quansah does the exact same to Adingra down near the corner flag.

14:19, 60

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Joe Gomez is shown the fifth yellow card of the game for pulling back Adingra on the counter-attack.

I think that is what you call a ‘professional foul’ nowadays because Adingra had a great run on goal if he had got past the England international.

Brighton get a breather as a foul is given on the halfway line, Baleba maybe didn’t get the slow down message because his chip towards Liverpool’s box finds nobody in blue and white.

14:16, 55

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Brighton are all over the shop as they give the ball away cheaply again on the edge of the box that Salah picks up and drives forward.

The Egyptian has looked slightly clumsy today as he tries a spin in the box, hits the ground and smiles knowing there was no foul to be given.

Confusion amongst Brighton’s defensive ranks gives Bradley a sight at goal. The Northern Irishman smashes a shot towards goal but it can’t find a way through a crowd of Seagulls players.

14:10, 50

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

David Coote might as well not have bothered putting his cards back in his pocket as Van Dijk finds his way into the referees book for pulling back Adingra.

14:09, 49

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Danny Welbeck has just been given a very bizarre yellow card after complaining that Brighton should have had a foul.

I presume the card was for dissent but the goalscorer didn’t seem very animated and more confused than anything after being shown a yellow by David Coote.

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Klopp’s team-talk shows signs of immediate improvement as Adingra sizes up Quansah but is muscled off the ball by the young Liverpool defender. Much better than we saw in the first half.

14:06, 46

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

We’re back underway at Anfield. This scoreline suits the two teams that have just arrived at the Etihad 40 minutes up the road as Man City host Arsenal an Liverpool will be desperate to find a winner.

Brighton’s attackers have Liverpool’s number

The story of the first half may mostly have been about Liverpool but Brighton’s attackers are looking equally dangerous every time they go forward.

I imagine Klopp is in the dressing room now fervehntly giving out instructions to Bradley and Quansah because Adingra has been tormenting both of them almost every times he gets over the halfway line.

Salah has been Liverpool’s main instigator but the concern for Liverpool is the Egyptian’s shooting has been well below par.

13:48, 47

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Welbeck hasn’t done tons since his stunning goal but does really well to win Brighton a free-kick on the halfway line that takes the sting out of Liverpool’s attack. Anfield isn’t happy as the fans sense a goal is coming.

13:46, 44

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Both teams have just taken their foot off the accelerator in the last couple of minutes, possibly not wanting to concede just before half time.

Liverpool are still looking like the more dangerous outfit but Brighton are like a sleeping predator just waiting to pounce on the counter-attack.

We will have four minutes of added time.

13:40, 39

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

This has been a crazy first half with Liverpool largely on top but Brighton showing fleeting signs of danger.

It’s entertaining to watch but the concern for Liverpool is the game is so expansive that they rarely look to have any control on proceedings.

You don’t know which way this one is going to go and Klopp won’t like that.

Liverpool break following a Brighton corner and Tariq Lamptey does exceptionally well to steal the ball off of Diaz’s feet.

This match is being played at an incredible tempo and you feel there are plenty of goals still to come. Liverpool top the Premier League as things stand.

13:36, 36

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Liverpool seriously need to wake up because Brighton are getting so much space down the left-wing – largely through Adingra – and Bradley is struggling defensively. If their finishing was better then Brighton would be back in front!

Mail Sport’s Nathan Salt at Anfield: ‘This home crowd is well and truly fed up of David Coote and his assistants.

‘Exploding with rage at nearly every decision – this time a late offside call given against Brighton.

‘Absolutely electric in here and you can see why Klopp’s men are able to rally back from deficits time and again.’

It’s end-to-end action as Adingra bursts past Bradley before firing into the sidenetting before Salah finds himself through on goal but tamely toepokes the ball into the goalkeeper’s hands. Huge chances missed at either end!

13:30, 30

Liverpool 1-1 Brighton

Brighton players demanded Diaz’s striker be ruled out for offside but replays show the Colombian timed his run back into the box to perfection as the ball took a touch off Dunk. Anfield is rocking.

13:27, 27

GOAL: Liverpool 1-1 Brighton (Luis Diaz)

Breakthrough for Liverpool as Luis Diaz times his run to perfection back into the box following a corner and stabs the ball past Verbruggen. Back on level terms and deservedly so.

13:27, 25

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Brighton are struggling to keep hold of the ball and that is allowing Liverpool’s defenders to push right up to the halfway line.

The one positive for the visitors is that they look very organised when defending with a host of players behind the ball.

13:24, 23

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

The Reds have largely attacked down Brighton’s left-flank but are just slowing things down slightly as they try to take the sting out of Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

It was a truly magnificent strike that gave the visitors the lead and you get the feeling Liverpool are getting closer and closer to scoring.

13:21, 20

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Pascal Gross now finds himself in the book for a foul on Mac Allister. Referee David Coote seems to have little patience for nonsense today as he lays the law down early.

What a chance, what a miss and what a moment that was for Salah. The Egyptian beats the offisde trap and watches Mac Allister’s chip all the way but volleys over from close-range.

Liverpool are knocking at the door, will Brighton allow it to creak open?

13:17, 14

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Brighton counter-attack and Alexis Mac Allister is losing the footrace against Simon Adingra as he pulls down the Seagulls star just inside Liverpool’s half.

The referee took a while to blow for the foul and when he does decides to show Mac Allister a yellow card who must know be careful for the rest of the game.

A sending off would be a disaster for Liverpool.

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Salah wins a corner as he finds space inside the box but doesn’t trust his right-foot and by the time he has scopped the ball onto his favoured left has the ball swept away. Corner comes to nothing and Brighton will try to break.

13:13, 12

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Liverpool are dominating possession – as expected- but Brighton are doing well to get what seems like every man behind the ball.

That forces Liverpool to shoot from range and Alexis Mac Allister has a sight at goal but leans back and watched his shot sail into the stands. Brighton reply by trying to waste time at the goal-kick.

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Mohamed Salah pulled Liverpool level in the reverse fixture this season and is doing his best to repeat history again. Brighton can’t get a grip of him but there is too many players in the box to fashion a shot on goal.

The Egyptian then does find space as Brighton concede possession but his effort sails wide of the upright.

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Darwin Nunez wasnts a penalty claiming that he has been pulled back by Pervis Estupiñán but nothing is given. There was contact but it was minimal and VAR rightly allows play to continue.

Liverpool 0-1 Brighton

Liverpool started poorly and were punished by Welbeck. Brighton won the ball back virtually from kick-off and passed through the hosts’ midfield with concerning ease.

Klopp looks stunned in his dugout and understandably so as Brighton look to come again!

GOAL: Liverpool 0-1 Brighton (Danny Welbeck)

Wow what a start and what a finish that is from Danny Welbeck. We said the former Man United star would be desperate to score at Anfield and he has just put Brighton ahead with an outrageous goal.

The ball bounces just in front of Welbeck on the edge of the box and his half-volley is smashed into the top corner. What a start!

KICK OFF: Liverpool 0-0 Brighton

We are underway at Anfield as Brighton get the back rolling following an emotional tribute to former Liverpool player Larry Lloyd.

Here come the players

Here we go then, Anfield is on its feet to welcome their warriors into battle and what a chance the Reds have today.

Anything but defeat and they go top of the table but victory is truly what they need as Jurgen Klopp’s side seek to put two-points breathing space between themselves and leaders Arsenal.

Dropping points at this stage of the season could be fatal.

Will the elements play a factor today?

Think of all the things that can affect a game of football and the weather is probably not one at the top of the list, but it could play a factor at Anfield today.

Mail Sport’s Nathan Salt is at the match and provided us with this pre-match snippet as players head back to their changing rooms before kick off.

It’s a windy one here at Anfield as the Liverpool players put the finishing touches to their warm-up. Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas were the last two off as they tried to make it across the pitch with a game of volleys – only for Elliott to miscue it.

Lots of expectation here with the chance to take control of the title race ahead of the late game

Virgil van Dijk talks coping with title-chase pressure

The Liverpool captain has been discussing what it takes for the Reds to win the title this season as they remain locked in a three-way race with Man City and Arsenal.

Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool must remain ‘cool-headed’ during the end-of-season run-in which is a lot easier said than done!

Adam Lallana: ‘It’s amazing coming home’

The Brighton midfielder returns to his former stomping ground today and it’s clearly emotional for him as he describes Anfield as ‘home’.

Adam Lallana spent six-years at Liverpool and was an ever-present figure under Klopp’s reign that coincided with the club’s most successful spell in the modern era.

It would be some horror story if Lallana was to score today and condem Liverpool to defeat, but he will only be able to play a bit-part role after being named on the bench by De Zerbi.

Speaking pre-match on Sky Sports, Lallana said:

Absolutely amazing coming home. You know, I love love coming back back here.

And I do I do call it home. Great, great fond memories here. And yeah, I’m used to playing them and picked up a few good results in last few years.

Audition day for Roberto de Zerbi

Brighton’s Italian chief is one of the names tipped as a frontrunner for the Liverpool job at the end of the season.

Xabi Alonso’s Reds rejection in favour of staying at Bayer Leverkusen has put the cat amongst the pidgeons and you wonder whether De Zerbi will be extra motivated to put on a show today against a potential future employer.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim remains the out-and-out favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer, but De Zerbi wouldn’t do his recruitment chances any harm today with an impressive win.

Theo Walcott: ‘A lot has to happen for Liverpool to win the league’

The Arsenal legend has been heaping praise on Jurgen Klopp pre-match, insisting the German who is set to leave at the end of the season is Liverpool through-and-through.

However, despite issuing a glowing review of the Reds boss, Walcott warned that Liverpool have the most work to do out of fellow title-chasers Man City and Arsenal.

Will we see another six-goal thriller today?

Last time these two teams met at Anfield in the Premier League saw an instant Premier League classic played out as Brighton took a deserved share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Leandro Trossard was Brighton’s hattrick hero and moved to Arsenal just a couple of months later, while Roberto Firmino scored twice at the other end.

Two of the Premier League’s most attacking teams might just go all-out again today, but something tells me Liverpool will be concerned about trying to match Brighton’s expansiveness.

Alexander-Arnold provides injury update

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been speaking to Sky Sports pre-match and revealed he is in the final stages of his recovery from a knee injury. If Liverpool are still in the title hunt when he comes back then that might just be enough to send Liverpool to the title.

Well now finally in like the final stages last couple of weeks. Just excited to get back out there. You know, it’s it’s hard watching it and not being a part of it. been the longest one of my career so far.

But it’s not it just gives you that hunger to get back out there and perform. I think a couple of weeks and hopefully if everything’s keep going well keep progressing and there’s no setbacks then then yeah, obviously, keep going.

Got to keep working hard and obviously not going to get straight back into the team. I’m expecting but it’s it’s exciting. I want to get back out there. I want to help the lads and I want to be in the title race.

BRIGHTON TEAM NEWS

There’s no place for former Liverpool Premier League winner Adam Lallana amongst the starters for Brighton, but there is for ex-Man United striker Danny Welbeck who I’m sure would love to score against his former side’s arch rivals today.

LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS

Jurgen Klopp makes just once change from the Liverpool team that started against Man United in the final game before the international break as Conor Bradley comes in for the injured Andy Robertson.

Jarrell Quansah keeps his place alongside Virgil van Dijk in defence ahead of Ibrahim Konate who starts on the bench.

Brighton have arrived at Anfield

The visitors are inside Anfield ahead of kick off and there was very little emotion on show from the players walking through the famous corridors of one of English football’s greatetst stadiums. Nerves or excitement?

Who won’t we see today?

Liverpool’s injury woes continued during the international break as Andy Robertson became the latest star to join the growing list of players in the treatment room at Anfield.

The Scotland international was withdrawn during a midweek clash against Northern Ireland and is unable to feature today due to a subsequent ankle problem.

Robertson is joined by Trent Alexander-Arnold who is still nursing a knee complaint while Diogo Jota, Alisson, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago, Ben Doak, and Joel Matip also remain unavailable for the Reds.

A familiar face might be in the stands today

Liverpool fans were delighted after seeing Fernando Torres working alongside Klopp at Liverpool’s training base earlier in the week.

The Spaniard played for both Liverpool and Chelsea in the Premier League but enjoyed his best years playing in a red shirt rather than a blue one.

Torres could be in the stands for today’s Anfield clash and you can expect Liverpool fans to serenade him if he is.

A question of Liverpool’s mentality?

Liverpool at Anfield are an almost impenetrable force at times. But, as they arrive at the ground today you wonder how they will be feeling after their draining defeat against Man United before the international break.

United’s dramamtic 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final victory saw Liverpool slumpl out of the competition as Amad Dialo virtually won the match with the last kick of the game before the international break.

It was draining for both sets of players but Liverpool didn’t have the winning feeling to carry them through their recovery.

Liverpool aren’t used to losing this season – they have only done so twice in the league – so it will be interesting to see if there is any mental hangover from that crazy night at Old Trafford.

Good afternoon and thanks for joining us

Hello, happy Easter and welcome to today’s coverage of a huge clash at Anfield as Liverpool host Brighton in a jam-packed weekend of Premier League action.

The mission for Liverpool is simple: win and they go back to the top of the table. A draw would suffice by moving them one point clear of Arsenal but with City and the Gunners playing later tonight it would do little to help their title credentials.

For Brighton it is a story of finding form after becoming one of the English top-flight’s most inconsistent teams since the turn of the year. Roberto de Zerbi has won just two of his last five Premier League fixtures and will be desperate to put things right today.

Kick off is at 2pm, team news will be with us shortly and we have plenty to cover before then.
