The situation is becoming volatile in the days leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft. A meeting between the Washington Commanders and quarterback Jayden Daniels did not go as planned, and this may have increased J.J. McCarthy’s chances to be the second overall pick this Thursday in Detroit, Michigan.

With the draft just a few days away, everything seems to indicate that the Chicago Bears will stick with the first overall pick to take the number one prospect, quarterback Caleb Williams, into their ranks.

Likewise, at least until Saturday, it seemed like Daniels was assured of the second spot with Washington. However, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, this changed radically after a meeting with the Commanders’ leadership that went south unexpectedly.

In an analysis for ESPN’s “Get Up” morning show, Schefter explained that Daniels’ agent, Ron Butler, was very displeased by the meeting with the Commanders. The analyst explained that the team called twenty players to the meeting, which was considered a lack of respect for the agent and the quarterback.

An unusual decision by Washington

“It didn’t seem to go over too well with the agent for Jayden Daniels, Ron Butler, who sounded off on social media last night that he didn’t seem particularly pleased with the process,” Schefter said regarding the aforementioned gathering.

Apparently, Jayden believed that only he, his agent, and the Commanders’ bigwigs would be at the meeting. However, rumors indicate that in addition to him, at least three other of the top five QB prospects were also called up: Daniels, McCarthy, Drake Maye, and Michael Penix Jr.

If true, the situation could turn the draft upside down. Although it’s still too early to say for sure, Washington runs the risk of Daniels refusing to play for them.

Even if the Commanders call him in the second round, if the two sides do not manage to resolve their differences, the situation could lead to a stand-out like the one Eli Manning did in 2004 to avoid playing with the then-San Diego Chargers and being transferred to the New York Giants.

McCarthy could be the beneficiary

Should the problems between Daniels, Butler, and the Commanders’ top brass persist, the biggest beneficiary could be J.J. McCarthy.

So far, analysts consider that the University of Michigan graduate could be one of the top seven overall selections. However, so far, there is little consensus on where he might land.

Mock drafts have made endless speculation, from the Minnesota Vikings trading up to get him to the New England Patriots taking advantage of their third pick to pick him as Tom Brady’s successor.

The controversy between Daniels and the Commanders has introduced a new level of drama into this 2024 Draft subplot, which will only be resolved when both players’ names are mentioned during the official ceremony this Thursday.
