A passionate assessment of football’s morals by Gordon Strachan has re-emerged on Twitter over the past few days.

The video, originally from 2014, was shared in response to Manchester United‘s statement on the future of Mason Greenwood

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. All charges were dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their co-operation.

United released a statement on Wednesday saying a decision has not yet been made over the 21-year-old’s future amid reports that the club were planning to bring him back into the first team picture.

In the video, Strachan claims that ‘we don’t have any morals in football’ before outlining that he encountered ‘wife batterers’, ‘drunken-driving incidents’ and ‘infidelity’ throughout his career as a player and manager.

He continued: ‘The supporters, when these guys come back, stand up and applaud them onto the pitch. So don’t anyone start talking about morals because we don’t have any in football.

‘All it’s about is winning football matches. If these things had been done by youth team players, who have not got any importance to the first team, they [would] get sacked.

‘Because [first team players] can bring in merchandise and bring in money, they (clubs) will back them to the hilt.’

The clip, which has been liked over 7,000 times, ends with presenter Adrian Chiles saying that Strachan has painted a ‘very depressing view of football’.

It had been reported that Arnold told senior staff that Greenwood would be returning to the club two weeks ago on August 4.

According to The Athletic, Arnold intended to record and share a video explaining Greenwood’s reintegration with the men’s first team to staff and the general public.

Arnold’s original plan was for Greenwood not to be involved in any appearances with the club’s charitable arm, the Manchester United Foundation.

But in their statement on Wednesday, United insisted no decision had been made.
