Is Klopp likely to make lots of changes for Arsenal clash?

LEWIS STEELE: There will be some changes but there won’t be wholesale alterations to the XI. Of course, Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo will be two definite changes and maybe they will give Caoimhin Kelleher a chance in goal but, other than that, it will be a strong team.

After this game they have a Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham at Anfield on Wednesday so there is a quick turnaround again. That clash is a great chance to get to Wembley and win some silverware so it will be interesting to see how much weight Klopp puts towards it.

Can Owen Beck really step up to the first team?

LEWIS STEELE: I’ve spoken to a few people north of the border who are Scottish football experts and they say this lad is top class. That obviously does not mean he is ready to play for Liverpool but it suggests he is a capable pair of hands.

Dundee were devastated to lose the Welshman, as seen in their club statement when the Scottish side confirmed he was to be recalled. Luke Chambers and Conor Bradley are also young full backs who have played in cup competitions and it can’t be a bad thing to have Beck.

What is the latest with Thiago Alcantara?

LEWIS STEELE: Thiago Alcantara trained alone on Christmas Day and the Spanish midfielder is finally on track to return in the next month. Liverpool have been unable to call upon him all season due to a nasty hip injury.

Jurgen Klopp said last week: ‘Thiago is in a very good moment but we just have to make sure we don’t use him too early.’ He is likely to return to team training in the coming week or so and then be eased back into a return.

What about all these links to Kylian Mbappe, what’s going on there?

LEWIS STEELE: It’s one that never goes away and sorry to burst your bubble, Liverpool fans, but this is another non-starter. The only situation in which Liverpool would sign Kylian Mbappe is if Mohamed Salah leaves for Saudi Arabia. Things can change, of course, so don’t give up all hope.

What about outgoings? Can Liverpool fans expect any? Fabio Carvalho has been recalled, is he likely to go back out on loan?

LEWIS STEELE: Fabio Carvalho will go back out on loan but that’s not to say he doesn’t have a long-term future at Liverpool. Leicester and Southampton seem to be the front-runners and they would be good moves for the midfielder, even if perhaps seen as a step down, due to their attacking styles.

He flourished in the Championship with Fulham when they were down there and this could be a very important move for Carvalho and he should be looking to play every week rather than searching for another big club like RB Leipzig.

There’s been rumours about Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, is there anything concrete about it?

LEWIS STEELE: Joshua Kimmich is an accomplished and versatile player so it would be wrong to say Liverpool would not be bothered if a cheap deal was available, but as we stand there is no concrete interest at all in the Bayern Munich midfielder.

With his contract set to run out in 2025, though, this could be one to watch in the summer, with this the last chance the German giants have to recoup money for Kimmich. I’ve heard Manchester City are keen, too.

Are Liverpool likely to sign anyone this month? If so, who?

LEWIS STEELE: Liverpool are not likely to go into the transfer market this window. They are always keeping their eyes peeled for opportunities – as seen with Cody Gakpo’s move last winter and Luis Diaz a couple of years ago – but none are planned this January.

They need a new central defender in the summer despite the emergence of Jarell Quansah, with Joel Matip out for the season and then out of contract. And they are watching a few players but none are at an advanced stage and I’m expecting a quiet January.

Endo is heading off as well, is Mac Allister fit enough to start? Will he play on Sunday?

LEWIS STEELE: Yes Alexis Mac Allister is fit enough to start against Arsenal. He came on against Newcastle with about 15 minutes to play on Monday and produced a sublime pass that led to Diogo Jota being fouled for Liverpool’s fourth goal – one of the balls of the season.

But Endo will be a huge miss. He’s come on leaps and bounds since a slow start to life on Merseyside after his £16.2million move from Stuttgart. He is a leader, tenacious in the tackle and good in possession.

Diogo Jota has played well when he’s been brought into the action, do you think he’s going to play a massive part while Salah is at the AFCON?

LEWIS STEELE: Jurgen Klopp said last week that Diogo Jota has a better football brain than most in the game and it is easy to see why. The Portuguese forward seems to see openings just a second earlier than other players and has an eye for goal, too.

A feather that Jota has in his cap is the versatility. He can play on the left and through the middle, as well as on the right if needed. It’s similar to Cody Gakpo, and both will be crucial in the next month.

How will Liverpool cope without Mo Salah? The form of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz in terms of goals is worrying.

LEWIS STEELE: Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz have been off the boil in the last month but both put in their best performance in some weeks against Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

Diaz looked to have found some confidence again, while Nunez consistently got into good areas.

But of course Salah’s departure is seismic and, if they were to lose out on the Premier League title by a few points dropped this month, it could be a huge turning point.

Liverpool’s forward line is expensively assembled and now is really time for those others to step up in terms of goals.
