Australia Post bracing for biggest delivery day in 210-year history

Australia Post says it is ramping up for its biggest delivery day ever after huge online sales at the weekend.

Since Friday, Australia Post has delivered three million packages, with another three million expected to land on doorsteps and in mailboxes across the country today.

Throughout the pandemic more retailers moved online and more customers chose to shop virtually, with 40 million parcels delivered by Australia Post throughout November.

“Our people have worked incredibly hard all year, demonstrating agility and resilience to manage volumes we would traditionally have had months to prepare for,” Australia Post Executive General Manager Deliveries, Rod Barnes, said.

“We’ve made the right investments in our network and stand ready today to set a new record – the busiest day in our 210-year history – as we head towards our biggest peak in history.”

Mr Barnes said the company hired 5000 extra workers, chartered 18 freight flights and put another 3000 vehicles on the road to meet demand.

Online shopping data shows spending is up more than 70 per cent in categories such as food and liquor, home and garden, variety store purchases and health and beauty.
