A gang wielding a machete ambushed a group of Newcastle fans in Milan and cut the football jerseys from their back, stabbing one man three times and leaving him in hospital.

Eddie McKay, 58, was walking back to his hotel with his son and a friend shortly after midnight on Tuesday when around eight attackers pounced from behind in the Navigli district. He was stabbed twice in the arm and once in the lower back.

Mr McKay’s son, Ross, was hit on the head with a baton before a machete was used to hack at their Newcastle shirts.

The supporters were in the city ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League game against Milan, with 4,000 visiting fans expected at the San Siro.

Sam Gordon, Mr McKay’s nephew, told Mail Sport: ‘My uncle, cousin and their friend had just left a couple of other lads and were heading back to the hotel when around eight men in balaclavas appeared and attacked them.

‘My cousin was hit with what they think was a police-type baton and has a gash on his head. They had a machete and used that to rip at their Newcastle tops. They only ran off when they had the shirts.

‘My uncle was stabbed three times and left in a pretty bad way. It could have been much worse, though. He is in hospital and his daughter is going to Milan to help bring him home.

‘Thankfully, he is OK and is sitting up. He still wanted to go to the match on Tuesday night but that won’t be possible.

‘My uncle is retired now and is just enjoying watching Newcastle and being with his family. We’re all in shock and very upset by what has happened.’

Mr McKay, a granddad who has had two knee replacements, fell during the attack and was then stabbed by the men.

It is claimed Italian police, however, are trying to say the incident was not football related, despite the apparent motivation of hacking at the jerseys.

Mr McKay and his son have given police statements.

A Newcastle spokesperson said: ‘We are deeply concerned by reports that a supporter was seriously assaulted in Milan and are liaising with local authorities to understand the circumstances. Our thoughts are with the supporter & their family & we hope for a full and speedy recovery.’
