In Sinaloa, Mexico, a couple organized a party to announce the sex of their baby, and to do so they rented a small plane that would release the colored powder that would indicate whether it was a boy or a girl.
The couple waited for the Cessna plane to pass overhead, next to letters that read “Oh Baby” amidst hundreds of colorful balloons, while the two held hands.
An attendee at the party captured the terrifying moment when the plane plummeted before crashing, but neither the person taking the video, nor anyone else at the party, realized the terrible accident that occurred at that instant.
As the plane approached, it released pink smoke, signifying that the couple was having a baby girl, and then disaster struck.
The pilot appeared to pull the plane upward to avoid some palm trees at the end of the garden where the ceremony was held, when the left wing suddenly gave way, causing the plane to take a fatal dive.
No one noticed the fatal accident at the time
However, those attending the event seemed oblivious to the horror above their heads and continued to celebrate the gender reveal.
Photographs later revealed the 32-year-old pilot, Luis Angel N., lying in the wreckage of the plane before being rushed to hospital where he died, The Sun revealed.
The incident went viral online and users on social media had mixed reactions to the seemingly careless response of the partygoers.
One said, “The way the camera came back to focus on the couple without a care in the world for the pilot is sad.”
Another interjected, “Why do they have to make such extreme gender reveals lately, why can’t they just settle for something simple?”
One man said, “It sounds like he stressed the plane too much. I wonder if it was above safe maneuvering speed. I hate to see it.”
A user on “X”, formerly Twitter, added: “What’s the point of this in the first place? I see so many accidents and incidents when making gender disclosures.”
Other accidents due to a baby’s gender reveal
In 2021, a California couple’s gender reveal caused a wildfire that burned more than 7,000 acres of land.
The device used to release blue or pink smoke to announce the sex of the expected baby is believed to have caused the fire.
A spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the family could be held liable for the full cost of putting out the fire, which amounts to millions of dollars.
In another baby gender reveal, the father-to-be was killed and his brother was injured in an explosion that allegedly took place while they were building a device for use at a baby gender reveal party.
