Jude Bellingham struck in stoppage time to earn an impressive England a 2-2 Wembley draw with Belgium on Tuesday after a Youri Tielemans double had threatened a smash and grab victory in an entertaining friendly.

Tielemans struck in the 11th minute after a mis-hit clearance by England keeper Jordan Pickford, with Ivan Toney equalising with a penalty soon after on his first international start.

England, unrecognisable in approach from the side beaten by Brazil on Saturday, had a Jarrod Bowen goal ruled out for offside and squandered more chances before another defensive mistake allowed Tielemans to restore the lead with a diving header late in the first half after a lovely cross by Romelu Lukaku.

England continued to create chances in the second half with Toney, Phil Foden and the remarkable 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo all going close after intricate build-up play before Bellingham struck from close range in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Johnstone counts cost of save

Sam Johnstone suffered the elbow injury that leaves his Euro 2024 hopes in the balance while saving a powerful shot in training on Sunday, Mail Sport can reveal.

We can also disclose that the unfortunate incident cost the Crystal Palace goalkeeper a starting role in last night’s clash with Belgium.

Gareth Southgate was planning to select Johnstone from the start in place of regular No 1 Jordan Pickford, only to see his plans go up in smoke at his team’s temporary base of Tottenham’s training HQ in Enfield.

The 31-year-old injured the top of his forearm when saving a strike on goal.

Johnstone was left in considerable pain by the incident and has since returned to Selhurst Park.

The fact Johnstone was due to play indicates he would have gone to Germany as England’s second-choice keeper.

Stones adds to Walker blow

A penny for Pep Guardiola’s thoughts. First Kyle Walker, now John Stones.

As if the hamstring injury suffered by Manchester City defender Walker in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Brazil wasn’t bad enough, Stones limped off with a suspected groin problem last night to deepen the gloom at the Etihad.

Add to that the knock Manuel Akanji suffered this week on duty with Switzerland, and it’s been a rather miserable international break for City.

Oh well Pep, it’s only Arsenal next.

FA expect kit storm to fade

While half the nation appear to be up in arms over the modified cross of St George on the back of the recently released England home strip, those at the top of the Football Association are taking a more balanced view.

Well-placed sources have told Mail Sport that the storm prompted by the multicoloured cross — described by Nike as a ‘playful update’ — was unexpected, but there is a growing belief that the uproar will dissipate long before the team run out in the kit for their first Euros match on June 16.

No central role for Foden

There was an error on the official team sheet that showed Phil Foden playing in central midfield. If only.

The forward has impressed playing in a midfield role for Manchester City this season, leading to a clamour for Foden to be used in a similar fashion for England.

Gareth Southgate, evidently, is not convinced and put Foden back out on the left flank against the Belgians.

Milestone for Southgate

Tuesday night was Gareth Southgate’s 150th ‘appearance’ for England.

Having accumulated 57 caps during his playing career, the friendly was the 53-year-old’s 93rd in charge of the senior side since replacing Sam Allardyce in 2016.

Here’s hoping Southgate reaches 102 matches as manager by the end of the summer.

But there have been indications the Manchester United forward has carried a knock into the international break.
