The Championship returned with a bang as promotion hopefuls Southampton beat Sheffield Wednesday – with plenty more thrills and spills awaiting this season.

The likes of Leicester and the Saints will be among the firm favourites to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but the second tier is notoriously difficult.

However, a host of youngsters looked prime to take the division by storm.

Mail Sport’s HENRY CLARK has singled out five to keep a close eye on this campaign, including talented defenders and dynamic midfielders.

Here, we detail exactly why they are so highly rated.

Ben Cabango – 23, Swansea

The Welshman has had a good footballing education with the Swans, firstly under Steve Cooper and then Russell Martin. Cabango is a powerful centre back who is brave on the ball and is effective in both boxes.

His impressive form earned him a place in Wales’ World Cup squad last winter.

Hayden Hackney – 21, Middlesbrough

Burst on to the scene under Michael Carrick and displays many of the same qualities which saw his boss enjoy a long and successful career as a midfielder.

Hackney is always willing to take the ball in tight areas and very rarely gives it away when he looks to play forward.

Jacob Greaves – 22, Hull

A Rolls Royce of a player. Greaves has impressed at centre half since coming through the ranks at Hull, the club his father Mark played for, thanks in no small part to his wand of a left foot.

The form of others saw him shifted to left back at times last season but he looked equally adept in that role.

Dennis Cirkin – 21, Sunderland

Took the brave decision of swapping the comfort of Tottenham’s academy for first-team football in the north east and is reaping the rewards.

Dublin-born Cirkin is a buccaneering left back who is a threat in the final third but is also exceptional in one-on-one situations.

Billy Mitchell – 22, Millwall

Watch the energetic Mitchell in action and it is no surprise to learn that he comes from a family of Millwall fans.

The combative midfielder loves a tackle and has shone at the base of the Lions’ midfield under boss Gary Rowett. The 22-year-old has also shown an eye for a pass.
