Netflix has confirmed that the controversial reality TV show Outlast has been renewed for a second series.

The streaming platform took to Twitter to announce that a second instalment of the ‘ruthless’ survivalist show will soon be on its way.

The first series saw 16 contestants who identified as ‘lone wolves’ split into four teams and compete for a chance to win a cash prize in the Alaskan wilderness.

Netflix has not yet confirmed a release date for the second series, but it is expected to follow a similar format as its debut season.

Announcing the show’s future, Netflix tweeted: ‘Outlast has been renewed for season two.’

Outlast’s first season premiered on Netflix’s weekly Global Top 10 TV UK list at number six and made it into the Top 10 TV in 27 different countries.

However, the ‘ruthless’ show divided viewers as people took to Twitter to comment on the gruelling nature of the survivalist show at the time.

One person tweeted: ‘Started watching outlast on Netflix – these people are ruthless.’

Another said: ‘Outlast on Netflix is ruthless,’ while a third penned: ‘Was watching Outlast on Netflix and was interested, but my integrity is strong and seeing these terrible people makes it hard.’

A fourth added: ‘Outlast on Netflix is hard-core. And the way certain players assumed we’d see them as valiant underdogs we’d all be rooting for..? Mmyeah – not so much.’

The eight-episode first series, which aired on March 10, followed 16 survivalists as they parachuted into the Alaskan wilderness and tried to survive against all odds.

They were forced to overcome the freezing temperatures, hunger and wild animals including bears in a bid to win the cash prize of up to $1million.

The ‘lone wolves’ had to form a team with strangers with varying levels of survival skills and clashing personalities in a bid to survive.

The contestants were split into four teams and across the eight episodes, there was a fair share of tension from defections to betrayal in the teams.

After three weeks in the wilderness, it was team Charlie who were crowned as winners and took home the $1million cash prize after outlasting the other teams.

The team was made up of Seth Lueker, Paul Preece and Nick Radner and the trio worked together to secure the life-changing prize.
