Alexandra Dawn Wong was born on 18 April 1982, in San Francisco, California USA, and is an actress as well as a stand-up comedian, best known from being in the TV show “Black Box”. She has also starred in “American Housewife”, “Best Week Ever” and “Are You There Chelsea?”

Early Life and Education

Ali is of Vietnamese and Chinese descent, with her mother originally hailing from Vietnam, migrating to the US before Ali was born. Her father is an anesthetist, with origins from China. She grew up the youngest of four siblings, and attended San Francisco University High School, matriculating in 2000 and then enrolling at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During her time there, she majored in Asian American Studies, and completed her degree in 2005. She developed a strong interest in acting while in college, and spent time with the LCC theatre company, which is a group in the university. The group is the longest running Asian-American theatre company in the US. She also spent time in Hanoi, Vietnam during her senior year.

Comedy and Acting Career

Soon after college, Wong decided to try her hand at stand-up comedy for the first time, at the Brainwash Café. Following this experience, she decided she wanted to pursue that kind of career, and moved to New York City to further pursue comedy, where she performed frequently, and started to gain a lot of attention, so in 2011 she was named by Variety as one of the “10 Comics to Watch”. She also started to make guest appearances on television in such as “The Tonight Show”, and “John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show” which featured up and coming as well as established comedians.

Acting projects were soon offered to her, including a regular series role in the NBC comedy series entitled “Are You There, Chelsea?”, a sitcom based on the bestselling book entitled “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea”. The show was cancelled after one season, but she also made a guest appearance in the late night talk show “Chelsea Lately”, then afterwards in the VH1 show “Best Week Ever” and the MTV show “Hey Girl” in 2013. She then starred in “Savages” which is based on the Don Winslow novel of the same name and starred Taylor Kitsch and Blake Lively.

Recent Projects and Netflix

Ali was then cast in the film “Dealin’ with Idiots”, playing the character Kate, and afterwards in the medical series “Black Box” in 2014, in the role of Dr. Lina Lark. The show ran for a season but was cancelled after 13 episodes. She also made a guest appearance in “Inside Amy Schumer” and was hired as a writer for “Fresh Off the Boat”, a sitcom starring Hudson Yang and loosely based on the life of chef Eddie Huang and his titular book.

In 2016, she signed a contract with Netflix to create a stand-up special with the first released on Mother’s Day entitled “Baby Cobra”, which was filmed while she was seven months pregnant with her first child. A few months later, she spoke during the New York Fashion Week Opening Ceremony show, and also walked the catwalk. Shortly afterwards, she was cast as one of the main stars of “American Housewife”, which is a sitcom on ABC and has now been running for three seasons with her continuing to play her role. Concurrently she also released another comedy special for Netflix entitled “Hard Knock Wife”, this time filmed when she was seven months pregnant with her second child.

Personal Life and Social Media

For her personal life, it is known that Wong married entrepreneur Justin Hakuta, who is half Japanese and half Filipino, and the son of inventor and television personality Ken Hakuta. He has followed in his father’s footsteps, pursuing studies in business before going down the entrepreneurial path, focused on health-related businesses. They married in 2014, and have two children together; their eldest daughter is named after Marie Kondo who wrote the book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. The family resides in Los Angeles, California.
