In 1954, Turner moved to East St. Louis, where his Kings of Rhythm became one of the most well-known bands in the region.

Turner was hailed as a “great innovator” of rock & roll by contemporaries such as Little Richard and Johnny Otis and received critical praise.

Turner was named No. 61 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists, with the editor stating, “Turner was one of the first guitarists to successfully transplant the intensity of the blues into more commercial music.”

Turner received five Grammy honors, including two competitive awards and three Grammy Hall of Fame nominations.
