In a little less than three years, Jalen Hurts went from being a somewhat overlooked second-round draft pick to being an MVP-caliber quarterback and one of the NFL’s highest-paid players. It’s been a somewhat meteoric rise for Hurts, but one that hasn’t been all that surprising given the talent and work ethic he’s shown throughout his career. Hurts now has a net worth that’s estimated at around $30 million, although that is likely to grow considerably in the years to come.
After growing up in the Houston area, Hurts went to Alabama to play college football for the Crimson Tide. He became the team’s starter just two games into his career, becoming the first true freshman starting quarterback at Alabama in over 30 years. That season, Hurts threw for over 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for over 950 yards and 13 touchdowns. However, the Crimson Tide fell short of a national title, losing the championship game to Clemson 35-31.
A year later, Hurts led Alabama back to the national title game. However, he was benched in the second half in favor of Tua Tagovailoa, who led Alabama’s comeback win over Georgia. The following season, Hurts was relegated to backup duties behind Tagovailoa all year. Ironically, Hurts came off the bench in the SEC Championship Game to spark Alabama’s comeback win over Georgia and secure a 13-0 record for the Crimson Tide.
After graduating from Alabama in three years, Hurts transferred to Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility, knowing he would continue to backup Tagovailoa. He led the Sooners to a Big 12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. However, Oklahoma lost the national semifinal to Joe Burrow and LSU. Hurts would also end up finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting to Burrow that year.
Despite four teams selecting a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, including Burrow and Tagovailoa, Hurts wasn’t selected until the second round. He started four games as a rookie with mixed results but showed plenty of promise during his second pro season in 2021. During the 2022 campaign, Hurts broke out as a bonafide star.
Despite battling a shoulder injury late in the season, he was 14-1 as a starter, throwing for over 3,700 yards and 22 touchdowns while rushing for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Hurts returned for the playoffs and led the Eagles to the playoffs. Many fans and bettors on platforms like DraftKings Sportsbook believed Hurts could lead the Eagles past Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. But despite throwing for over 300 yards and scoring three rushing touchdowns, Hurts lost a costly fumble that was returned for a touchdown and ended up being the difference in Kansas City’s 38-35 win.
Despite losing in the Super Bowl, the Eagles rewarded Hurts with a five-year, $255 million extension that briefly made him the highest-paid player in league history. Philadelphia is banking that Hurts will continue to perform at a high level and make them a perennial Super Bowl contender for the foreseeable future.
