Sadio Mané (born on April 10, 1992) is a Senegalese professional footballer who plays as a forward for Premier League club Liverpool and the Senegal national team. He will officially join the Bundesliga club Bayern Munich on 1 July 2022. Mane is considered to be one of the best players in the world and amongst the greatest African players of all time. He is famous for his hat-trick scored in a total of 176 seconds in Southampton’s 6-1 victory over Aston Villa in 2015. Also, he is best known for his versatility as a player often creating something out of nothing for his teammates on the soccer pitch. Mane debuted for Metz on January 14, 2012, in a 0-1 loss to Bastia. On September 23, 2014, Mane played his first match for Southampton in a 2-1 victory over Arsenal. On August 14, 2016, Sadio had his debut for Liverpool FC in a 4-3 win against Arsenal. He debuted for the Senegalese national team in 2012. At the international level, Mané has registered 33 goals in 91 appearances for Senegal since his debut in 2012, and currently ranks as his nation’s all-time top goalscorer, and third in all-time appearances. 

Sadio Mane Football Career 

Sadio Mane started his football at the age of 15 after he escaped his home village and went to Dakar. In the year 2009, when playing in M’Bour, he was spotted by scouts and later referred to Génération Foot, where he helped them to promote to the second division in the 2010–11 season. 

Metz

  • Mane joined the club, Metz in 2011 which had a partnership with Génération Foot. He made his professional debut for the club on 14th January 2012 against SC Bastia.
  • He then moved to the Austrian club side, Red Bull Salzburg. He scored his first hat-trick for the club on 31 October, in a 3–1 away win at SC Kalsdorf in the third round of the Austrian Cup.
  • At the end of August 2014, Mané forced a transfer out of the club. 

Southampton

  • On 1st September 2014, he transferred to Premier League side Southampton signing a four-year contract and made his debut 22 days later in a 2–1 League Cup victory over Arsenal. He finished his 2014-2015 season with 10 goals from 32 appearances in all competitions and finished the 2015-2016 season as Southampton’s top scorer, with 15 goals in all competitions.
  • On 28 June 2016, Mané joined Liverpool on a five-year contract and the transfer fee made him the most expensive African player in history at the time. He made his Premier League debut for the Reds on 14th August. 

Liverpool

  • On 22nd November 2018, Mané signed a new long-term deal with Liverpool. On 14th August 2019, he scored twice in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea in a match that Liverpool won 5–4 on penalties after the game had finished 2–2 after 120 minutes. 
  • On 7 March, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 win against Bournemouth at Anfield as Liverpool set a new English top-flight record of 22 consecutive home wins. Liverpool then went on to win the Premier League title at the end of the 2019-2020 season. 
  • He opened his scoring account in the 2020–21 Premier League with both Liverpool goals in a 2–0 win away to Chelsea on 20th September 2020. 
  • On 3 May, he scored the winning goal in a 3–2 away victory over Villarreal in the Champions League semi-final, to secure his team’s place in the final, which Liverpool eventually lost 1–0 to Real Madrid. 

Bayern Munich

  • Mane then left Liverpool and joined Bundesliga club Bayern Munich on a contract with the German side until 30 June 2025 on 22nd June 2022. 

International Career

  • Coming to his international career, Sadio Mane was part of Senegal’s team during the 2012 Olympic tournament. 
  • He was ruled out of the Senegalese squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a calf injury in  Southampton’s 2–0 win against Arsenal. 
  • Next, he represented Senegal at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. Against Cameroon, he missed the penalty in the shoot-out due to which Senegal was eliminated. 
  • He was named in Senegal’s 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May 2018. 
  • He was again called up to Senegal’s final squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite finishing the competition as runner-up, Mané was named to the Team of the Tournament.
  • At the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, he starred for Senegal as they won the competition for the first time. He was named the player of the tournament.
  • On 4th June 2022, he scored a hat-trick in a 3–1 win against Benin in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification, to become Senegal’s all-time top scorer with 32 goals, surpassing Henri Camara.
