The cast of “The L Word” had a special visit to the White House on April 25 in celebration of Lesbian Visibility Week. The actresses Leisha Hailey, Jennifer Beals, and Kate Moennig, along with series creator Ilene Chaiken, and Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly lesbian White House Press Secretary, participated in a press conference to discuss issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. The women spoke about their experiences and urged queer people and their allies to stand up and continue to fight in the current political climate.
Jean-Pierre praised “The L Word” and its reboot “Generation Q” for being two Showtime series that chronicle the friendship, love, challenges, and triumphs of strong, funny, and resilient queer women. She shared that she was even an extra in the “Generation Q” finale where Beals’s character, Bette, married Tina. After the press conference, the cast was set to meet with LGBTQ+ staffers to discuss the administration’s work.
Chaiken reflected on how “The L Word” broke barriers when it debuted in 2004. She acknowledged the importance of entertainment culture in showing LGBTQ+ stories and how it helps individuals see themselves reflected and embraced in society. “The L Word” originally aired on Showtime from 2004 to 2009, and its reboot finished its third season in January 2023. After Showtime canceled the series in March, the network also removed “Gen Q” from its streaming platforms. But, another spin-off called “The L Word: New York” is in development.
