Zendaya has shared a rare insight into her relationship with boyfriend Tom Holland as she graced the cover of British Vogue’s May Issue.

The actress, 27, who is set to star in the steamy upcoming film Challengers, stunned in a tennis-inspired shoot for the publication, while sharing that the Spiderman star has ‘beautifully’ handled his own catastrophic rise to fame.

Zendaya and Tom met on the set of Spiderman: Homecoming in 2017, but predominantly keep their relationship out of the public eye.

Speaking about her relationship, she said: ‘We were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight

‘I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.’

Zendaya also revealed that she has also considered the prospect of starting a family in the public eye, admitting she doesn’t want her future children to ‘have to deal with her fame.’

She said: ‘It’s a matter of sustainability, how she can continue to make this demanding business that she loves so dearly work for her.

‘Because I don’t necessarily want my kids to have to deal with this [fame]”… and what does my future look like? Am I going to be a public-facing person forever?’

Discussing her fame, she added: ‘You just kind of get used to the fact that, ”Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of.” I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life.’

‘I think growing up, I always felt like when someone asks for a picture, I have to do it, all the time. You have to say yes, because you just need to be grateful that you’re here.

‘And while I still feel that way, I also have learnt that I can say no, and I can say kindly that I’m having a day off, or I’m just trying to be myself today, and I don’t actually have to perform all the time.’

Zendaya went onto add: ‘Now, when I have these moments in my career – like, my first time leading a film that’s actually going to be in a theatre – I feel like I shrink, I can’t enjoy all the things that are happening to me, because I’m like this,’ before balling up her fists.

‘I’m very tense, and I think that I carry that from being a kid and never really having an opportunity to try s**t. And I wish I went to school.’

The star also discussed playing an adult mother herself in her upcoming film Challengers, where she stars opposite Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist.

‘I’m always in a high school somewhere. And, mind you, I never went to high school.

‘So to break away from that was refreshing. And it was also kind of scary, because I was like, I hope people buy me as my own age, or maybe a little bit older, because I have friends that have kids, or are having kids.’

The sizzling feature from Suspiria and Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, an aspiring tennis star who gives up her career after suffering a major injury.

Instead, she focuses on coaching her colleague Art (Faist), whom she falls in love with and marries, but she finds her feelings dangerously divided after Art is enrolled on the Challenger Tour, where he faces off against Tashi’s ex-boyfriend Patrick (O’Connor).

Discussing her role as the ruthless sportswoman Tashi, she said: ‘Typically, I play the person that ultimately is easier to empathise with.

‘There was something about her that felt very, ”Oh damn”. Even I was kind of scared of her.

‘I mean, listen, she takes the s**t to a whole new level… yeah, I’m competitive in the sense that I want to work hard and I try not to be competitive with anyone else. I try to just be like, ”I already did that, OK, so now I got to do better.”’

Meanwhile, Josh said of starring alongside Zendaya: ‘It was my first big American studio movie, and she was really good at making both Mike and me feel at ease,’ says O’Connor.

Faist added that she wanted them ‘to take the work seriously, but not take ourselves too seriously while we were doing it,’

‘I think it’s a real gift to be able to do what we do… and at times it’s very, very silly. I think she very much acknowledges the smoke and mirrors that it can be, and the complexities of all of it.’

In a recent interview, Zendaya also revealed that having an intimacy coordinator on set while she filmed Challengers was ‘very helpful,’ and praised them for keeping a ‘safe’ environment on set.

‘We had an intimacy coordinator which was fantastic and very helpful, because it was important that we felt safe,’ she told The Hollywood Reporter.

The film is suffused with ‘intense’ erotic scenes between Zendaya and her leading men, so the trio needed to find ways to decompress when they were on camera.

‘I spoke with my colleagues so that we could find a way to feel at ease. We played tennis together, we went out together, we rehearsed together,’ she shared. ‘We got to bond and feel good with each other.’

Faist agreed and added that that unstructured time was essential to creating a solid bond and portraying believable romance on screen.

‘We were able to spend time together during rehearsals and beyond, especially with Josh,’ he explained. ‘We were able to get to know each other as people before we could get into the film. We created a real friendship that created the basis of the film.’
