In recent news, a New York jury has ruled that former U.S. President Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million for defaming columnist E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when he was in office. The penalty, which includes $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages, stems from a previous case where Trump was found to have defamed and sexually assaulted Carroll in the 1990s.

Trump, who plans to appeal the decision, labeled the case a witch hunt and criticized the verdict as “absolutely ridiculous.” The compensatory damages are intended to address the harm caused to Carroll’s reputation and emotional well-being. Additionally, the punitive damages aim to discourage Trump from further disparaging remarks.

The jury, consisting of seven men and two women, reached the verdict in less than three hours. Trump, facing multiple legal challenges, including four criminal cases with a total of 91 felony counts, is the first U.S. president charged with a crime. Despite pleading not guilty, he now faces a significant civil penalty.

In response to the verdict, Carroll expressed her satisfaction, stating, “This is a great victory for every woman who stands up when she’s been knocked down.” Her lawyer emphasized that the decision underscores the principle that the law applies to everyone, including the rich and famous.

Trump, denying any wrongdoing and claiming he never met Carroll, criticized the legal system and announced his intention to appeal. He called the situation a “Biden-directed witch hunt” and lamented the perceived erosion of First Amendment rights.

The recent trial focused on defamatory comments made by Trump in 2019, separate from the previous case that found him liable for defamation and ordered him to pay approximately $5 million in damages. Carroll has yet to receive any money from Trump, who has paid a deposit pending the appeal process.

Despite not being present for the verdict, Trump’s departure from court followed a tense moment when the judge threatened to jail his lawyer for speaking out of turn. The former president continues to assert that the legal challenges against him are politically motivated. As he positions himself as the Republican front-runner for the 2024 presidential election. He potentially facing a rematch against Democrat Joe Biden.
