BBC bosses could have a sneaky set of contestants to look out for in the upcoming series of The Traitors.

Amongst the 300,000 people who have applied for a space on the show, some have plotted to conspire against the BBC.

According to The Sun, some applicants – who are through to stage 2 of the process – have grouped up and planned to use a secret code if they appear in the show.

But one traitor has already betrayed their mini alliance by disclosing the plan to producers Studio Lambert.

A source told the publication: ‘The group chats spoke about using code words. If they were chosen as a Traitor, they were going to say “I’m feeling hotter than usual today, anyone else?” Traitors would answer “yes”, Faithfuls “no”.

‘They agreed to split the prize pot. Some were just interested in fame and had fake arguments planned to get more airtime.

‘But they gave so much personal information away, they could be pinpointed directly to their auditions. One was a surgeon, so it was easy for casting to pick out applicants by name and give them the boot.’

Rest assured, all the swindlers have been ‘given the boot’ because they risked the integrity of the show.

MailOnline have contacted the BBC for a comment.

Almost 7M viewers watched the season two finale in January and now producers are said to be racing against time as they try to whittle down to just 22 hopefuls in time for filming, which is set to begin in a matter of months.

A source told The Sun: ‘[Filming] has to start in the spring because during the summer months the hours of daylight in the far north of Scotland are far too long’.

‘Which is a big problem because, as anyone who’s watched the show will know, a lot of it has to take place at night.

‘So if they miss their window of opportunity to film, it causes problems’.

Before going on to say how thrilled the producers were to have so many hopefuls apply to appear on the show.

Host Claudia Winkleman recently revealed that she initially turned down the job of hosting The Traitors but the ‘exceptional’ Dutch series changed her mind.

The TV presenter, 52, appeared on the fifth series of acclaimed podcast Dish with Waitrose for its new episode earlier this month.

Speaking to podcast hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, Claudia said she was asked to present the show three or four years ago but turned it down ‘because of the licking of the eyebrows’.

‘And because of my innate laziness,’ Claudia added, before saying that she had recommended a host of other presenters who could instead take on the gig – which was filmed in Ardross Castle.

However, determined to keep Claudia in the running for hosting, a boss at BBC encouraged her to watch the Dutch version of the series – and soon enough the Strictly Come Dancing presenter was offering to book her own train to Scotland.

She said: ‘I was like, “I’m really sorry I can’t go to Scotland for three and a half weeks, but thank you so much for thinking of me. And why don’t you ask the following people? Thank you, bye.”

‘And they said, “Just before you say definite no, can we just send you the tapes of the Dutch version?” And I was like, “Yeah, okay, I really won’t get round to…” and then four days later, “Have you watched it yet?” I was like, no… I am napping.’
