Jose Mourinho has described Daniel Levy’s decision to sack him as Tottenham manager just days before a cup final as ‘ridiculous’.

The 60-year-old replaced Mauricio Pochettino at the north London club back in 2019, taking charge of 86 games before he parted ways with Spurs in 2021

While he was unable to win silverware with the club during his time in charge, Mourinho did guide Spurs to the final of the EFL Cup in 2021, defeating Chelsea, Stoke and Brentford to reach the showpiece event.

His sacking came as a bombshell announcement, with Mourinho being released of his duties following a poor run of form in the Premier League. His departure also interestingly came after it was confirmed Tottenham would be one of the clubs that would be defecting to join the European Super League

Mourinho has now shed more light on his sentiments towards Tottenham after his dismissal, admitting the decision is one that still does not sit well with him.

‘The most ridiculous one was a club that has an empty trophy room sacks me two days before a final,’ he said to the Obi One Podcast. ‘That was the one that was… come on!

‘Tottenham have never won for 50 years. I don’t remember when. I am two days before a final and I couldn’t do the final. It’s the one which doesn’t smell well.’

Tottenham’s last major trophy came in 2008 where they clinched the League Cup under Juande Ramos.

Mourinho, meanwhile, amassed 27 wins, 14 draws and 17 defeats across 58 league games with Tottenham before departing the club to join Roma in the summer of 2021.

Despite that, Mourinho has previously admitted he does ‘not have a close bond with Tottenham’ with his relationship with the club breaking down since his departure

Having won titles with Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, the Portuguese manager admitted he was baffled to be let go by the club despite his excellent record winning titles at Wembley.

He added: ‘I had a plan but sometimes it doesn’t work. But the reality is every time I went to Wembley with Chelsea I won. I went there with Man United three times, I won twice.

‘So the record was good. It was a stadium and atmosphere which I dominate well, because when you go into these big matches you need to feel comfortable, you cannot go to these matches and feel the stadium is too big.

‘I had the experience to try and help the team but the final was against Man City so I would be an idiot right now to say we would have won.

‘But a few weeks before that, we won against them 2-0 at our stadium, so the feeling was positive. But it is what it is.’

Ryan Mason would succede him at the north London outfit, taking charge of their EFL Cup final match against Man City, which Spurs would ultimately go on to lose, 1-0.
