Unfortunately for Parton, Howard Stern’s team used the recording of Parton’s audiobook to put words in her mouth. They did this by editing the audio of Parton to make it sound like she was saying horrible things.
To say that Parton was upset by the edited audio of her that was played on Stern’s radio show is a huge understatement. The usually unflappable Parton was so outraged by Stern’s bit that she put out a statement in which she threatened that she was considering suing Stern.

When Parton released her aforementioned statement about Stern’s comedy bit, she didn’t just threaten to sue. Parton also revealed why she was considering taking Stern to court. As Parton explained in her statement, she was deeply hurt by what Stern’s team made it sound like she said.
“I have never been so shocked, hurt and humiliated in all my life. I cannot believe what Howard Stern has done to me. In a blue million years, I would never have such vulgar things come out of my mouth. They have done editing or some sort of trickery to make this horrible, horrible thing.”

Without knowing how far Stern’s comedy bit went, it may seem like Parton was wildly overreacting to the situation. However, with more information, it is easy to see why Parton would be profoundly upset by the idea anyone would think she said those things.
As of March 2024, a recording of Stern’s re-edited audio from Parton’s audiobook is available on YouTube under the title “Dolly Partons Audio Remixed”. However, the recording will offend a lot of listeners because of how extreme it is.
Stern’s bit is too extreme to be fully described here. What can be revealed is that Stern’s team made it sound like Parton uttered the N-word multiple times. The audio also includes insults directed at Kenny Rogers and Linda Ronstadt. In Rogers’ case, the audio makes it sound like Parton was claiming he did some of the worst things imaginable.
