Superstar Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run as a Los Angeles Dodger during Wednesday night’s game against the Giants. The ball was caught by long-time Dodgers fan Ambar Roman, who met with team officials to discuss handing it over to Ohtani.

However, Roman alleged that the Dodgers used high-pressure tactics to persuade her and her husband to give up the ball. Ohtani, through his translator, mentioned “talking to” the fan, though Roman claimed they never met.

“I was able to talk to the fan, and was able to get it back,” Ohtani said.

“Obviously it’s a very special ball, a lot of feelings toward it, I’m very grateful that it’s back.”

This incident comes amidst Ohtani‘s former translator being involved in a gambling scandal. The Dodgers offered Roman two signed hats, a signed bat and a signed ball in exchange for the home run ball, which she considered unfair.

How much money did the fan lose?

While Ohtani‘s home run wasn’t a milestone, it could have fetched a significant sum at auction, potentially over $100,000. Comparisons were drawn to a fan who auctioned Aaron Judge‘s record-breaking home run for $1.5 million in 2022.

“They really took advantage of her,” Roman‘s husband, Alexis Valenzuela, told The Athletic.

“There were a bunch of [security] guys around her. They wouldn’t let me talk to her or give her any advice. There was no way for us to leave. They had her pretty much cornered in the back.”
