Over the years, actors have filmed nude scenes and decided to wear body prosthetics instead of completely exposing themselves on screen.
Eric Dane, who plays Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, previously explained what goes into working on such a vulnerable part of the project.
“Those scenes are very difficult to shoot. It helps to have one voice in your ear. One voice that you can express your feelings to, and somebody that is an advocate for the actors,” the Grey’s Anatomy alum explained to Entertainment Weekly in June 2019. “It just simplifies a lot of things and makes for a safe and comfortable environment while shooting something that is fairly uncomfortable to shoot. And certainly, the stuff that we did in the pilot is no exception. It’s a pretty intense scene.”
During the pilot episode, Cal is seen meeting up with an underage Jules (Hunter Schafer) after talking on a dating app. Even though Jacobs wasn’t opposed to nudity, he explained that it was a group decision for him to wear a prosthetic penis instead.
Meanwhile, Dane’s TV son Jacob Elordi also weighed in having to strip down for some very graphic Euphoria sex scenes.
“Every scene is like, ‘He sleeps with this person. He does this with this person naked,’” the Kissing Booth star said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in March 2022. “On Euphoria, it comes with the territory of the character. He’s this ultra-masculine, macho jock. Those guys, I think, tend to go around pretty shirtless, so it’s sort of OK.”

In May 2024, Pelphrey recalled filming a scene for Netflix’s A Man in Full that involved his character Raymond standing fully nude. Pelphrey’s character specifically had to be erect after popping Viagra, which meant using a prosthetic.
“It was more the conversation about exactly what we want this prosthetic to be,” he told Variety. “There was a terrifying moment where part of the fitting process, as described to me, involved a lot of hot wax, which scared the hell out of me. And we were luckily able to avoid it.”
Pelphrey added: “There was a lot of work, a lot of meetings, a lot of talking, a lot of fittings, went into that prosthetic.”
In December 2023, creators Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz confirmed that Terrell wore a prosthetic while filming NSFW scenes for the Netflix series.
“We would never put Terrence in that situation. There was a lot of manhandling and prodding. And it’s not just Terrence but also Tobias [Jelinek], who plays the sadistic Ehren, he has a lot of interaction with Trunk’s situation,” Heald told Deadline. “The attitude was always to make sure that was a prosthetic and that we weren’t asking somebody to be put in that vulnerable situation.”
“There were a few conversations about the prosthetic, regarding what was realistic and what wasn’t,” Melton told Variety in December 2023 about filming a sex scene with Natalie Portman for May December. “I had to wear that prosthetic for nine hours that day. I didn’t have anything to drink that morning or the night before. That was an annoying process but still very respectful.”
In June 2023, the actress confirmed that certain scenes in Sex/Life required her to wear prosthetic breasts because of her character’s changing body.
“These were not my boobs … it took about 3/4 hours every morning for our prosthetics team to put them on. I wore them in any sex scene with Cooper or if I had to show boob while breastfeeding,” she wrote via Instagram Story alongside a photo of her behind the scenes. “See?? Silicone glue right there.”
Shahi elaborated on why she used prosthetics, writing to “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast host Amanda Hirsch via Instagram DM, “For all the Cooper sex scenes and baby. For Brad scenes those were mine cuz it was in the past. Not breastfeeding boobs. Make sense?”
During season 2 of Sex/Life, which premiered in March 2023, Sadowski’s character, Devon, had a full-frontal moment. The character happily showed off his penis during a locker room scene while boasting about having an enhanced appendage following a car accident that left him needing reconstruction surgery.
“He was so stoked for it,” Sex/Life intimacy coordinator, Casey Hudecki, exclusively told Us of the scene. “I don’t wanna speak for him, but I’m sure he will tell you that he thought it was hilarious. And he was ready.” She explained that for Sadowski, “He had a whole prosthetic process before and after [the locker room moment].”
Creator Stacy Rukeyser, however, wouldn’t confirm whether Sadowski used a fake penis during the pivotal scene. “I’m not sure it’s a prosthetic,” she teased during a March 2023 interview with Variety. “We’ll never tell.”
The England native shot a full-frontal scene in the season 2 premiere of The White Lotus, in which his character Cameron dropped trou in front of his wife’s friend Harper (Aubrey Plaza).
“The truth of it was you go into these things and you have a conversation with the director and the producers, and they go, ‘OK, for this, we’re going to use a prosthetic, we’re gonna use something,’” James admitted during a December 2022 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “It’s a pee-pee prosthetic. … [I told the makeup artist that] I wanted it not to be distracting. He needs to be [a] regular Joe because the scene’s not about the pee-pee, it’s about power play in sex [and] whether he did it deliberately or whether it was an accident.”
In June 2022, the Gossip Girl alum revealed that he was wearing a prosthetic penis for the infamous poster that was later adjusted because of his visible bulge. “[Showrunner Eric] Kripke was like, ‘We get no notes from Amazon, but the first one we got was that can’t f–king happen, we’ve got to take that out,'” Crawford recalled during an interview with Daily Mail Australia, referring to a 2019 promotional photo of his character The Deep. “And we had to edit it out.”
In HBO Max’s Minx, Perez plays firefighter-turned-model Shane, who is the centerfold for an erotic women’s magazine. The actor had no problem wearing a prosthetic for the part.
“I’m all for it. If the project and the scenes call for it, why not?” Perez told Entertainment Weekly in February 2022. “But I think just to throw a bare-chested woman or ass-out guy into the scene without it making sense, then it’s gratuitous and takes away from the quality of the content.”
The Red, White and Royal Blue actor added, “But I think when my mom sees it is when I will be a little freaked out.”
While taking on the roles of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee on the Hulu series, James and Stan were both dressed in prosthetic private parts. The Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again actress said she spent four hours in makeup to prepare for filming.
Stan’s character has an entire conversation with his penis, voiced by Jason Mantzoukas. The prosthetic was mechanical and required two puppeteers.
Costume designer Kameron Lennox noted that the Marvel actor also required prosthetics when his character walks around in a silk G-string, but the typical prosthetics created to be on camera didn’t look great in costume.
“His prosthetic was so big that once you put it in the G-string it looks like he’s got serious health problems,” Lennox told Thrillist. A “garment penis” was made by special makeup effects designer Jason Collins and his company Autonomous FX for clothed scenes, and Lennox also used “packers” (a type of stuffing) for different scenes.
Upon winning Best Male Lead at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in Red Rocket — in which he played a former porn star — Rex couldn’t help but mention his prosthetic appendage from the film. “Thank you Film Independent, for recognizing my fake penis,” he joked during his acceptance speech at the March 2022 ceremony.
The American Horror Story star previously discussed Ryan Murphy surprising him with a scene in Ratched — alongside Sarah Paulson — that required him to wear a prosthetic penis.
Demos and series creator Stacy Rukeyser have previously been vague when asked about his character’s iconic shower scene. In July 2021, Newsweek reported that a member of the prosthetics team confirmed the use of prosthesis in that moment.
The actor discussed bringing the onscreen moment to life in March 2023, telling The Project TV, “Yes [it is a prosthetic]. That just makes you feel better. Also, to all the men out there who were worried, it was.”
In Vacation, the Australia native’s nearly nude scene when walking in on Ed Helms and Christina Applegate‘s characters included both a body double and later an eight-inch prosthetic.
