A deleted Mean Girl tweet following the popular sports blog’s recent layoffs sparked an intense Barstool Radio podcast drama involving Dave Portnoy.

Tensions are running high at Barstool Sports HQ right now after a deleted Mean Girl tweet has seemingly put the office at odds. Mean Girl is a podcast by Barstool, and features married Alex Bennett and single Jordyn Woodruff who come together for honest conversations about relationships, friendship, struggles, moving to a new city, and growing up.

To understand the Barstool Mean Girl drama, we first need a bit of context. At the end of August 2023, it was revealed that Barstool was laying off nearly 25 percent of its employees, which would result in around 100 lost jobs.

The layoffs came after the media company was returned to founder Dave Portnoy following its relationship with Penn Entertainment.

“I’ve been very clear. Anybody that’s paid attention, we are going to have layoffs and cuts, and they’ve started and it sucks,” Portnoy said on Barstool Sports Radio. “And people who know me from the beginning [know] I hate firing people. You can be incompetent, not work and I generally don’t fire because I hate it so much. It’s the worst thing to f–king do.

“Having said that, we’re in a position it’s a no-brainer. It’s not like I have that moral — well, you can’t do it because nobody will have jobs. We’ll all not have jobs. So we have to get back to a break-even thing. We’re losing a lot and it sucks.”

What the deleted Mean Girl tweet said

Despite the layoffs, Mean Girl hosts Alex Bennett and Jordyn Woodruff retained their positions at the company. However, in the aftermath of the layoffs, a since deleted Mean Girl tweet was heavily criticised by people on social media.

The Mean Girl tweet featured a short clip of Bennett and Woodruff entering the Barstool office rather happily. Over the video footage was the text: ‘When you show up to work Monday not fired even though all the Stoolies wish you were.’

The tweet also included the words: ‘sorry not sorry.’

The tweet received a fair amount of backlash, with many criticising it as insensitive and disrespectful for all the Barstool staff who recently lost their jobs.

Dave Portnoy threatens to fire Chris Klemmer over his Mean Girl tweet response

The deleted tweet was criticised by some even within Barstool. Podcaster Chris Klemmer responded to the Mean Girl tweet saying: ‘This such a sh**** and tone deaf tweet. Also, it’s Tuesday.’

However, Barstool President Dave Portnoy took exception to Klemmer’s comments, and replied on Twitter: ‘You know what is tone deaf to me. An easily expendable person like yourself not writing 1 blog over weekend after layoffs. I’m not defending their tweet. I just don’t think tone deaf people should chirp tone deaf people. If you didn’t work at all I was paying close attention.’

Following the drama, Portnoy, Klemmer, Bennett, Woodruff, and other Barstool regulars, came together to discuss the incident on a recent episode of Barstool Radio.

In the one hour and 38 minute podcast, Klemmer stood by his comments about the tweet and said he didn’t agree with it. Things escalated pretty quickly when Portnoy told Klemmer he wouldn’t last long at Barstool with his attitude, however, Chris stuck to his guns.

“You’re gonna be jobless”, Portnoy remarks at one point. “Alright then I’ll be unemployed but at least I’ll be unemployed on my own [terms],” Klemmer replied.

Fans weigh in on the Mean Girl tweet and Portnoy and Klemmer’s exchange

The entire podcast was uploaded to the Barstool Sports YouTube channel. They also shared it in an article which had comments enabled at the bottom.

Fans weighed in on the drama, and seemed to be on Klemmer’s side.

‘Dave knows Meangirl tweet was wrong, but can’t say it because it will hurt a company losing money,’ one fan wrote.

‘Im actually concerned if this is the ongoing Dave I’m not going to support Barstool anymore,’ another commented. ‘He is so concerned about Klemmer hurting the company, while he just destroying his own credibility and likability. Dave be better. You likely are surrounding yourself around yes-men, but we are calling you out.’

‘Klemmer is right. Free this man!!!!’, another added.
