Why is Cristiano Ronaldo in Iran?

The Riyadh-based club is taking on Iran’s Persepolis on Tuesday September 19.

Al Nassr released videos of the scenes surrounding the team bus, with thousands of fans running, screaming and taking photos as they chased the Portuguese icon. Other submissions from social media show crowds in the thousands bearing down on the hotel, chanting Ronaldo’s name.

Ronaldo returns to the Champions League

CR7 is one of the most successful players in Europe’s most prestigious club competition. He won the UEFA Champions League four times with Real Madrid and once with Manchester United.

This will be his first test in the Asian Champions League, hosted by the confederation AFC. Al Nassr has never won the competition, but Saudi rivals Al Ettihad have won it twice, while Al Hilal holds the record with four titles.

This will be the first time an Iranian team has played a Saudi team at one of their own stadiums since 2015. The countries severed diplomatic relationships in 2016, but restored them earlier this year.
