Bronny James wasn’t expected to declare for the NBA Draft after just one season at USC. Following a serious heart scare, James came back to play in 25 games during his freshman year, but wasn’t a big part of the team.
Despite averaging under five points per game, James decided to enter the upcoming draft anyway. Many have speculated that it’s because his father, LeBron, wants to play one or two seasons with Bronny before riding off into the sunset.

The problem with that plan is that an NBA team must actually draft Bronny or sign him as a free agent. And that isn’t exactly a given.

The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor recently interviewed several NBA team front office employees, and their assessments of James’ future were brutally honest to say the least.
Bronny is nowhere near ready. He should go back to school to develop at his own pace or he risks getting lost in the shuffle, whether or not he’s playing with his dad… There are probably three rounds’ worth of prospects more talented than Bronny in this class.
That was according to a general manager in the league who, obviously, wouldn’t reveal his identity.
Given the fact that general managers are generally the ones with the final say on selecting players in the draft, it’s extremely concerning for James’ prospects.
Bronny is an undersized non-shooting guard. The shot looks good but doesn’t go in. Those guys scare me the most. It’s either lack of touch or mental, and either way, those take years to correct.
That quote came from a scout from another team. The scout also added that he doesn’t buy into the takes that Bronny would play better with more talented teammates, saying that “he had better players this year and was still inefficient“.
The third NBA personnel interviewed, a “front office executive“, was a bit nicer than the other two.
He played extremely hard. It was apparent that his skill level needed time to develop, and that’s certainly OK as a prospect.
It’s clear that James will be a very polarizing prospect over the next few months.
