Yet the visible effects of his alcoholism—red cheeks and slurred speech—prompted a rethink. His turning point was a golf weekend with friends; by Sunday, he was shaking but still drinking. He knew he could no longer continue drinking that way.

He then asked his wife to help him. He humorously remarked, “it was like turning myself in to the Gestapo.” She made some calls that day and got him into a treatment center where he detoxed. He remarked that when he had detoxed, he realized he liked the feeling of being sober.

In 2016, Goodman believed he weighed somewhere close to 400 lbs when he decided to change. While he was usually able to lose a lot of weight in three or four months, he usually put the weight back on quickly. He shared:

“Then, this time, I wanted to do it slowly, move, exercise. I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore.”

Goodman said that exercising and eating better had also given him the energy to work, which he found draining. He decided to lose weight once and for all when he no longer wanted to look at himself in the mirror.

The actor also hired a personal trainer, Mackie Shilstone, who combined diet and exercise to help him lose weight and keep it off. Shilstone revealed Goodman’s weight loss had been an ongoing process and did not happen overnight.

Shilstone also advised Goodman to follow a Mediterranean meal plan comprising fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, and olive oil. The actor exercised six days a week and walked between 10,000 and 20,000 steps daily.
