Newcastle could make a move for Tottenham‘s Hugo Lloris in January, according to reports.

The Magpies’s No 1 Nick Pope faces a number of months on the sidelines with a dislocated shoulder, leaving manager Eddie Howe having to instil confidence in his No 2 for the foreseeable future.

Martin Dubravka deputised for Pope in Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat to Everton on Thursday, and is expected to remain in goal for the foreseeable future with Loris Karius as back-up.

But the January transfer window will provide the club with an opportunity to sign cover for Pope as they look to continue to push on all fronts following a successful season last term.

According to The Sun, Newcastle could make a shock move for Lloris, who won’t play for Tottenham again and could be open to a transfer to St James’s Park.

Lloris made the last of his 447 Spurs appearances last season and has not been involved in a single match day squad this term after seeking a move away in the summer.

He failed to do so, but is still searching for an opportunity to leave the club he once captained and Newcastle may provide the perfect opportunity to do so.

At 36, the former World Cup winner wouldn’t be a long-term solution for any side, but would be able to provide adequate cover until Pope returns towards the end of the season.

Howe, however, has suggested that he is happy with Dubravka playing back-up, saying this week: ‘We have not made any inquiries or any decisions about our recruitment leading into January. This is a chance for the goalkeepers we have at the football club to consolidate their positions, and that will be the same for every other position at the club.’

United still maintain an interest in signing free agent David de Gea after his release from Manchester United last season, however.

The Spaniard remains a free agent following his departure from Old Trafford after 12 years, and has shared a number of cryptic messages on social media about his future.

Newcastle are believed to be encouraged by De Gea’s free agent status – though it is unlikely Lloris would command a fee either – and his Premier League experience, something Lloris can also match.

The Magpies have also been linked with a loan move for Arsenal No 2 Aaron Ramsdale in January.
